NOV 23 - NOV 29
Art and humor are vital spirit-lifters, especially in times of global confusion and discontent. This week we've got old-time Burlesque, threesomes, punk rock, filth, art for Jesus, and monkeys to soothe your soul, or at least boost your serotonin levels. We've also thrown in a couple of chances to redeem yourself through charity work. While you're out there soaking up good times, just remember to be grateful, and spread it. |

The guests weren't the only ones in disguise at the ABSOLUT HALLOWEEN party on October 30th. A 12-foot tall bottle of ABSOLUT RASPBERRI was going through constant transformation by underground artists David Ellis and Kenji. Check out the different guises and relive the night as the art was unleashed. |

| | When it comes to kicking out the jams, you'd be hard pressed to find three rockers this side of the MC5 as up to the task as Jon Spencer and the boys. Don't be shaken by the name change — "Blues Explosion" just ensures that drummer Russell Simins and guitarist Judah Bauer, two noteworthy musicians in their own right, get their share of the limelight. Jon Spencer himself, meanwhile, is still the feistiest blues renovator around, so come ride his growling, call-and-response vocals all the way to anarchic, scuzz-rock ecstasy. Getting you in the mood are Gossip, garage rockers whose only desire is to make you dance. (JCF)

MUSIC: Hip-Hop Kool Keith
|
| when: | Wed 11.24 (9pm) |
| where: | House of Blues Sunset Strip (8430 Sunset Blvd, W Hollywood, 323.848.5100) |
| price: | $20 / $17.50 advance |
| links: |
Event Info | Kool Keith |
| | Attention all female descendants of the Mothership: Kool Keith wants to take you for a ride in his anti-matter Escalade, wine you and dine you at the Burger King on Mars, and then maybe take you to his Barbarella bachelor pad for some intergalactic nookie. This multi-persona MC (aka Dr. Octagon, aka Black Elvis, aka Mr. Gerbik, the part-alligator, part-shark, part human-uncle of Dr. Octagon) lies somewhere in the musical family of Sun Ra, George Clinton, and MF Doom, armed with spaced-out sex rhymes of amazing skill and slow jams to loosen up even the most straightlaced Zeta Reticulan. (MS)

Keith is infamous for disowning his many aliases. What harsh words does he have for the Dr. Octagon project in this interview? Seventh correct answer wins a pair of tickets to the show.

| | Join Headinghome Recordings this Thanksgiving Eve at the M Bar — the cozy new home of LA's most beloved midweek dance party — and give thanks one day early for cheap drinks, red velvet booths, and deep, sexy beats. Get served by SF house pioneer DJ Garth and local darling Lillyanne as they take things to the left with an eclectic mix of dirty disco, dubbed-out house, and spacey tech. Break a sweat on the dance floor tonight, so you can indulge in a guilt-free food-induced coma tomorrow. (AM)

| | The word "pop" can mean a number of things: soda in the Midwest; Andy Warhol's art; the third Rice Krispie elf. In indie rock circles, however, one of the most likely connotations is of New Pornographers frontman Carl "A.C." Newman. A master of quirky pop-rock songcraft, Newman has exhibited his incredible knack for tasty hooks and melodies on various projects, including his recent first solo effort. The just-released The Slow Wonder is 34 minutes of clever and affecting bliss, sliced into succinct two- and three-minute blasts. These are tunes destined for heavy rotation in your brain long after the evening's final notes ring out. (JGS)

What was the name of Newman's first band, which recorded for Sub Pop? Fifteenth and 18th correct answers each win a pair of tickets to the show.

VOLUNTEER Thanksgiving Dinner
|
| when: | Thur 11.25 (10:45am-3pm) |
| where: | 527 S Crocker St, Downtown (213.346.0505 ext.31) |
| price: | FREE |
| links: |
Event Info |
| | Year round, different charity organizations throughout Los Angeles offer housing and support for homeless men and women living with mental illness. Thanksgiving seems as good a time as any for the rest of us to reach out and help those in need. Rather than sit around watching football or waiting for the turkey to brown, volunteers can spend an afternoon experiencing the act of giving. LAMP offers three dinner seatings to folks in downtown LA, and there are plenty of other places also serving dinner across the city, from morning to night. (TCR)

| | The idea of having the filthiest and heaviest possible metal show of the year on Thanksgiving night — even if it is sponsored by the corporate studded-belts at MTV's Headbangers Ball — is sheer genius. Who doesn't want to release all the aggression accrued around the family turkey by roaring with Satan? While the evening's lineup would make any fearful Christian seek refuge in the lion's den, it's British goth metallurgists Cradle of Filth who'll make even the mommas who sacrificed their virginity at Marilyn Manson's altar hide their newborns. Not for the squeamish. (PO)

| | Prepare yourself for for the Velvet Hammer, a lavish, 30-member burlesque troupe. This naughty extravaganza's mission is to preserve a treasure of American folk culture by recreating the sexy vaudeville variety shows of old Hollywood; this nostalgic girlie revue embodies burlesque's ménage à trois of humor, theatrical wit, and risky business. Bring on the retro sexy costumes, elaborate props, lively choreography, and comical striptease music, like they used to in the '40s and '50s. Now that's entertainment! (QD)

| | Back in the day, when you could run wild down Sunset Boulevard, dodging hookers and the occasional junkie to get into the Roxy for free with a crumpled-up Plimsouls flyer, X were the standard bearers of the LA music scene. Colliding punk, new wave, and roots music at frontier bars and clubs like the Brave Dog and the Veil, X's early-'80s, literate art punk was the perpetual next big thing. This garnered them an appearance in the legendary SoCal punk documentary The Decline of Western Civilization, and the keen interest of producer and Doors' keyboardist Ray Manzarek. Though they never quite reached the masses, X blazed a bright trail and left legions of fans in their wake. (MS)

ART: Opening Anton Henning: Tragedy, Sunburns & Still-lives
|
| when: | Sat 11.27 (6-8pm) |
| where: | Christopher Grimes Gallery (916 Colorado Ave, Santa Monica, 310.587.3373) |
| price: | FREE |
| links: |
Event Info | Anton Henning |
| | Berlin painter Anton Henning is a mulcher of art history. Culling styles from nearly every era of Western art, his images share an obvious taste for luxury, sensuality, and narratives drawn from dreams. His deeply felt approach to both life and art unites the body and the mind in pursuit of the common ground shared by classicism and modernism — the never-ending search for truth and beauty in the world. His male and female nudes, glistening abstract symbols, surreal landscapes, and object-based still lives all evoke stories of earthly delight. (SND)
Note: Abstract drawings by David Ireland are also showing. Both exhibitions continue through Sat 1.15.05.

| | If some digital noise boom-bap is your plan for shedding those newly acquired pounds, the Blue Bongo has your much needed IDM techno-fest — which also serves as Skinny Puppy's after-party. Main attraction Jega (né Dylan Nathan) is an architecture school pal of Richard "Aphex Twin" James and Mike "Mu-Ziq" Paradinas, and stalks the same sonic terrain (from beautiful ambience to drill 'n bass terrorism) as his former schoolmates. Schematic main men Phoenecia and Otto Von Schirach are, by turns, more hip-hop/electro-influenced and infatuated with the darker side of industrial life. (PO)

What label released Jega's debut 1996 EP? Thirteenth and 17th correct answers each win a pair of tickets to the show.

| | San Francisco's Gold Chains arrives tonight with a charismatic stage presence, accomplice Sue Cie (aka Sue Costabile of Orthlorng Musork), and an irresistibly kinetic performance. Making a name for himself on the basis of his obliquely political lyrics and signature raucous delivery, Gold Chains' modus operandi is a gleefully scattershot musical approach that references punk, hip-hop, dancehall, house, and experimental techno. On this outing, the two debut rockin', '60s-inspired tracks from their new album, When the World Was Our Friend, that should inspire spontaneous sing-alongs from longtime fans — and make some new compadres in the process. (MJ/PS)

Speaking of gold chains, what's your favorite hip-hop accessory? The two most stunnin' answers each win a pair of tickets to the show.

| | "Evil" Eddie Richards is one of those cats who've been around the dance music scene forever — longer, in fact, than the word "rave" has been used to describe it. So when Richards says that he helped bring the likes of Little Louie Vega, Richie Hawtin, and Todd Terry to Europe, and helped throw London's first acid-tinged warehouse parties, it's not braggadocio — it's history. Richards is taking it back to the warehouse in LA this weekend, and though you may wish that he had nicked a few more of the thunderous and funky records that his descendants play, chances are a few classics remain in his crate. (PO)

What's your definition of evil? Our favorite answer wins a pair of tickets to the party.

| | While a controversial figure for her ties to Nazi Germany, Leni Riefenstahl was first and foremost a talented filmmaker. And though she considered herself an apolitical artist, her Triumph of the Will marks the peak of the Nazi propaganda machine. Her second film, the technically innovative documentary Olympia, was her ode to the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin, a contest intended to promote the Aryan physical ideal. While tonight's screening is a reminder of Riefenstahl's skill, the program does not aim to rehabilitate her reputation. Instead it offers a pointed consideration of her life and a look at the potentially dangerous power of cinema. (TCR)

| | If you can guess what their name refers to, you'll get some insight into the type of randy rock you're in for with the Pink Mountaintops. Filled with lurid imagery and odes to onanism as they are, though, Stephen McBean's songs also have a surprising amount of innocence to them. His dreamlike delivery and unwinking sincerity — not to mention his compelling Eddie Vedder-esque vocals, sans growl — add enough gravitas to keep this one out of the comedy bin. Which isn't to say it isn't funny; anyone who sings, "I fuck my own songs," earns a chuckle or two. (JCF)
Note: The Pink Mountaintops also perform at the Echo on Tue 11.30 (8:30pm).

| | Curator Eve Wood has a penchant for organizing exhibitions around strong ideas, and the current group show at Gallery C is no exception. Event Info |
| | In the illustrious tradition of the French sex farce, Three proves that nudity, physical comedy, caustic wit, and emotional depth can coexist in the same production. The play explores the similarities and differences inherent in gay, straight, and lesbian relationships, through the stories of three couples whose relationships fit together like a Rubik's Cube. Through subtle wordplay and sensitive direction, the audience gradually comes to understand that the biggest threat to love is treating it casually. Expect brief, lovely nudity. (SND)

Event Info |
| | Much has been made of the uncanny resemblances between humans and primates. In celebrity portraitist Jill Greenberg's new exhibition at Paul Kopeikin Gallery, these simian similarities finally get their due: traditional format portraits of monkeys. Greenberg's immense talent as a technically skilled and psychologically sensitive portraitist, coupled with her subversively witty subject, endows her images with eerie familiarity. They're sure to make you laugh, and look in the mirror with a vague unease. (SND)

| CD REVIEW: Various Artists, The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Covered Uncovered |
 |
Gammon Records
Released September 2004
$13.99 (Amazon)
|
Outsider musician Daniel Johnston's oddball, homegrown folk-pop is equal parts madness and innocence. With wide-eyed naïveté and a God-ordained gift for melody, Johnston crafts deceptively simple songs that possess great depths. His readily apparent mental illness, childlike song structures, and untrained voice (which comes off like a rawer Neil Young — if that's even possible) may have kept Johnston from broad commercial success, but it's precisely these qualities that have attracted the attention of some of today's best musical artists. The first half of this double-disc package features covers of Johnston songs by Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, Beck, the Flaming Lips, Tom Waits, TV on the Radio, and more, while the second presents a retrospective selection of original Johnston recordings. | STREAMS: fabric |
 |
Throughout its five-year history, fabric has cultivated a loyal global following with its forward-thinking music policies. The staff handpicks the newest and freshest DJ/production talent, then gives them complete creative control over their performances — on one of the world's best sound systems, no less. The club has seen luminaries such as Ricardo Villalobos and Richie Hawtin going back-to-back, Black Strobe's Ivan Smagghe tearing the roof off with his blend of acid and gloomy disco, and perhaps most memorably, the late John Peel DJing to a room where the audience continued to sing "Teenage Kicks" 15 minutes after he took the needle off the record. For your listening pleasure, check out some exclusive mixes from the various fabric residents. (CJN)
