JULY 27 - AUGUST 2
Artists, acolytes, and motorists alike are celebrating summer love this week — love of all things Californian, that is. From the past, there's LA maverick Robert Altman's unsung gambling opus; from today, there's Sacramento-bred art-funk, locally brewed alcoholic hip-hop, and (in full-on Cali style) automobile worship. But if you want to look further than your dashboard or even your statehood for inspiration, heed the divine undercurrent as artists explore over a 100 visions of Heaven and Hades. Act locally, and spread it globally...

Your houseplants can't take themselves for a walk, so today it's up to you. Celebrate "Take Your Houseplants for a Walk Day" and enjoy the fresh air — arm in arm with your favorite fern or ficus. Take them to the local pond for a dip or run them under the garden sprinklers. See life from a refreshing new angle with your houseplant and a glass of ABSOLUT.

FILM
California Split (1974)

when: Tue 7.27 (7:30pm)
where: Egyptian Theatre (6712 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, 323.466.FILM)
price: $9
links: Event Info

Though financially unsuccessful at the time of its release, Robert Altman's California Split is the first great example of the auteur's signature laissez-faire style in which he lets human behavior speak for itself. The humans (mis)behaving here are Elliot Gould and George Segal, two lackluster gamblers who meander through a hazy world of overlapping dialogue and improvised lines, where everything rides on the next hand of cards. The intentionally drifting nature of the film underscores the inherent aimlessness of gambling — a vice that once brought Altman's Lion's Gate Films dangerously close to bankruptcy. (JCF)

What two other Altman films has Elliot Gould starred in? First and third correct answers each win a pair of tickets.

MUSIC: Indie Pop
The Delays

when: Wed 7.28 (8pm)
where: The Troubadour (9081 Santa Monica Blvd, W Hollywood, 310.276.6168)
price: $12 / $10 advance
links: Event Info | The Delays

If we hadn't heard the Delays' debut album ourselves, we'd swear you simply weren't allowed to make records like this anymore. Faded Seaside Glamour is a swirling collection of indie-pop bliss that mines the heritage of British luminaries from the La's to the Cocteau Twins while twisting in everything from sunny harmonies and electronic backdrops to steel drums. It all hinges on the phenomenal voice of the UK band's frontman Greg Gilbert, gliding from sublime falsetto to scratchy croon as if it were the most natural thing in the world. This show is part of the band's first US tour, already inciting stateside clamor. (DL)

What is the name of the studio where Faded Seaside Glamour was recorded? Sixth and 11th correct answers each win a pair of tickets.

MUSIC: Dance Punk
!!!

when: Wed 7.28 (9pm)
where: Henry Fonda Theatre (6126 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, 323.464.0808)
price: $18 / $15 advance
links: Event Info | !!!

Like the pronunciation of their name, !!!'s proper genre-fication proves elusive. The simplest classification is the most direct: dance music minus frosted tips and be-glittered halter tops. Primary rumpshaker Nic Offer and his six bandmates dish out ridiculous lyrics and infectious, calculated orchestrations of greasy hi-hats, chiming guitars, and straight-ahead rhythms, spinning them all on a swagger-exemplifying Lazy Susan. !!! make you want to uncross your arms and nod while looking slightly to the side — and maybe dance. (LC)

If you made all the rules, how would !!!'s name be pronounced? Our two favorite answers each win a pair of tickets.

MUSIC: Political Rock
Hope of the States

when: Thur 7.29 (7:30pm)
where: The Troubadour (9081 Santa Monica Blvd, W Hollywood, 310.276.6168)
price: $13.50 advance
links: Event Info | Hope of the States

Prematurely hurled into the UK media glare after the January suicide of guitarist Jimmi Lawrence, Hope of the States were always destined for the spotlight. The Chichester-based band blend Spiritualized-level orchestral bombast with the progressive songwriting and dark/light balance of the Cooper Temple Clause on their staggering full-length debut, The Lost Riots (released domestically this fall). Live, they stir up just as much of a racket while reigning in their carefully constructed chaos with melodic sing-along bliss. Now with new guitar-slinger Mike Hibbert on board, they set foot on our shores for the first time, and bring their much-needed musical hope to the States at last. (DL)

Before leaving to pursue a career in music, Jimmi Lawrence was studying at the University of Greenwich to receive his PhD in what subject? The first five correct answers each win a copy of Hope of the States' recent EP release.

MUSIC: Hip-Hop
Club Likwit with Danger Mouse and Tha Alkaholiks

when: Thur 7.29 (8pm)
where: Knitting Factory (7021 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, 323.463.0204)
price: $15 / $12 advance
links: Event Info | Likwit Crew

Few freshly jump-started hip-hop monthlies carry the immediate gratification and long-term promise of Club Likwit, set to make its debut at the Knitting Factory. Revolving around the decade-strong Likwit Crew — founded by Tha Alkaholiks and featuring a cross-section of LA hip-hop heavyweights (Madlib's Stones Throw clique, Phil da Agony, and extended family members such as Dilated Peoples, Xzibit, and others) — the Club has the connections to create some historic waves. And they're kicking it off in style, with tha 'Liks dropping booze-fueled rhymes while the media's DJ of the moment, Danger Mouse, plays the mash-ups that are rocking a million iPods. (PO)

Have a mishap with liquids in a club to share? Our three favorite stories each win a pair of tickets.

READING
Life and Limb: Skateboarders Write from the Deep End

when: Thur 7.29 (8pm)
where: New Image Art (1005 N Fairfax, W Hollywood, 323.654.2192)
price:  FREE
links: Event Info

Skateboarding got its cinematic props with Dogtown and Z-Boys, and now Soft Skull Press' Life and Limb: Skateboarders Write from the Deep End anthology slams the subculture into the written word. In its entries, Jocko Weyland doesn't hold back on the war of the wheels between skaters and bladers, and Ed Templeton provides a trippy travelogue of his Orange County skate haunts. With vivid prose, this anthology provides a view from the top of the halfpipe, and that inevitable free-fall that dedicated skateboarders crave. (MD)

MUSIC: Afrobeat
Antibalas

when: Thu 7.29 (9pm)
where: El Rey (5515 Wilshire Blvd, 323.936.6400)
price: $17.50
links: Event Info | Antibalas

Antibalas have become a favorite among both discerning hippies and revolutionaries. This Brooklyn-based 13-piece orchestra draws heavily on the tremendous musical and political legacy of the late Fela Kuti (think Africa's James Brown, Jim Morrison, and Miles Davis rolled into one) and the polyrhythms of the African and Latin diasporas to create an experience somewhere between an underground hip-hop night and a Dead show. With a lethal blend of Afrobeat, funk, jazz, dub, and salsa, their music is designed to move your a*ss, open your mind, and make you sweat. (MS)

DJ
Miss Kittin

when: Thur 7.29 (9:30pm)
where: Key Club (9039 Sunset Blvd, W Hollywood, 310.786.1712)
price: $17
links: Miss Kittin | Key Club | Tickets

The wise pronounced electroclash dead moments after it screeched to life. Miss Kittin read its eulogy with her mix in August 2002's Muzik Magazine. Like Richie Hawtin's Mixmag offering, the disc was something remarkable sandwiched between cheesy Ibiza pics and trance roundups. On it, Kittin played the artists known for pre-clash electro, like Detroiters Ectomorph, A Number of Names, and Arpanet, as well as the Euros heavy enough to wait out the clash, like Barbara Morgenstern, Thomas Brinkmann, Ellen Allien, and Michael Mayer. Tonight, expect a set of electro-techno buoyed by the live vocals that Kittin made a name with before her acid/crunch/glitch DJ sets. (NP)

In which French town did Miss Kittin gain her charming accent? Fifth correct answer wins a pair of tickets.

FILM
Roman Polanski's Repulsion (1965) w/ Wes Craven

when: Fri 7.30 (7:30pm)
where: Skirball Cultural Center (2701 Sepulveda Blvd, 310.335.0917)
price: $10
links: Event Info

This psychological horror masterpiece expertly winds the audience through the mind of a beautiful schizophrenic, Carol, played by Catherine Deneuve. Polanski's first feature produced outside of Poland, Repulsion (1965) uses evocative black-and-white imagery and minimal dialogue to explore the devastating effects of sexual repression on one young woman's mind. Polanski fans will see shades of Rosemary's Baby as Carol's apartment distorts and turns violent in her hallucinations, and some may wonder whether the sexual confusion reflects Polanski's own demons. For added chills, Scream maestro Wes Craven introduces this classic. (ES)

FILM
Luis Buñuel's Abismos de Pasión (1954)

when: Fri 7.30 (8pm)
where: UCLA Hammer Museum (10899 Wilshire Blvd, 310.443.7000)
price:  FREE
links: Event Info | Luis Buñuel

If reading Wuthering Heights induced narcoleptic siestas in your youth, Luis Buñuel's film adaptation Abismos de Pasión promises to explore sexual obsession in a way that keeps you from nodding off. In his version, set amidst the Mexican pecking order, the Surrealist forerunner explores the relationship between the fabled characters, now Alejandro and Catrina, with a macabre sensibility. Filmed in between his more famous works, such as Belle du Jour and L'Age D'Or (which was banned for over 50 years), Luis Buñuel's visual assaults on the bourgeoisie help to brush the dust from Bronte. (HC)

DJ: Tech House
Headinghome Record Release Party

when: Fri 7.30 (9pm-2am)
where: Boardner's (1652 N Cherokee Ave, Hollywood, 323.462.9621)
price: $5 / Free before midnight
links: Headinghome | Boardner's

Join LA's local leftfield house imprint, Headinghome Recordings, as they celebrate their latest release, Dubloner's Devious Turnip EP. Manning the decks in the main room, Dubloner delivers an innovative blend of minimal tech house mixed with the likes of Metro Area and Herbert. Expect jock support from up-and-comer Ryan Craig, whose recent Believe EP has caused quite a stir among the futuristic tech house set. On the patio, Chadski of Sarc Labs digs deep into his crates to drop a trippy blend of obscure and well-known deep dub grooves. (AM)

CITY GEM
The Blessing of the Cars

when: Sat 7.31 (8:30am)
where: Hansen Dam Park
price: $20 for Car Registration
links: Event Info

Pull out your dashboard Jesus, because God's our co-pilot today. This annual all-day and inching-into-the-night rockabilly and classic car event — founded by Stephanie (of the Minxes, Los Feliz's all-female car club) and Gabriel Baltierra — begins with a morning mass by a Catholic priest who then proceeds to bless each car individually. A clean soul is preferred, but this may not be the best time to confess sins involving the back seat. While we all need a little vehicular providence, the individual blessing is only open to pre-1968 vehicles. (MS)

What do you think is the holiest vehicle, and why? Our two favorite answers win a pass to this event.

MULTIMEDIA
Mezcla II: Summer Love

when: Sat 7.31 (6pm-midnight)
where: 33 1/3 Books & Gallery (1200 N Alvarado, 213.483.3500)
price:  FREE
links: Event Info

33 1/3 Books & Gallery is maintained by a collective of artists in Echo Park, who've turned it into ground zero for the revolution, circa now. Artists, DJs, and musicians alike gather at the space, which creates an environment ripe for the cross-pollination of alternative thought. Appropriately, it's here that the LA-based Mezcla Collective has put together Summer Love. Mezcla artists Thomas Lee Bakofsky, Eric Crandell, Gary Garay, Kevin Ramos, and Stephen Serrato contribute individual segments — drawings, photographs, designs — to create a single, massive, "love-filled art installation." At tonight's opening party, the dublab DJs man the decks, ensuring that the sounds are as well-loved and forward-thinking as the art. (AB)

MUSIC: Electronic
Art and Artifice 2004AD w/ Matthew Dear, Dabrye, and Midwest Product

when: Sat 7.31 (8pm)
where: The Echo (1822 Sunset Blvd, Echo Park, 213.413.8200)
price: $10
links: Event Info | Ghostly International

Celebrating five years of varied indie music, Ghostly is most often hyped for revitalizing the techno genre. Tonight's headliner, Matthew Dear, is the star of its Spectral imprint; he proved minimalism and human hooks can coexist with his 2003 album Leave Luck to Heaven, and his new Backstroke takes it one step further by adding him on the mic. Dabrye makes intelligent hip-hop, but not just for the IDM cool-kid crowd — yes, that's Detroit hip-hop legend Jay Dee on his "Game Over" single. Midwest Product join greats like OutHud and !!! in proving that a rock band can get their electronic on. Give up the ghost! (MD)

MUSIC: Lounge Rock
Populuxe

when: Sat 7.31 (11pm)
where: Room 5 (143 N La Brea Ave, 323.938.2504)
price:  FREE with password
links: Populuxe

With influences ranging from Roxy Music to Tom Waits, LA-based trio Populuxe do not so much compose as engineer their songs from an assortment of raw materials. Their smoky, offbeat lyrics revel in the comedy and tragedy of human relationships with self-deprecating humor, culling tales of vagabond optimism from the most mundane details of existence. Drawing on weighty guitar riffs and shabby chic keyboard stylings (and often including a full brass section at live performances), Populuxe offer a heady combination of the strange and the familiar. (SND)

Note: Password "swordfish" may be required for free admission.

MUSIC: Dance Punk
The Sound of Young New York

when: Sun 8.1 (1-9pm)
where: Standard Downtown Rooftop (550 S Flower St, 213.892.8080)
price:  FREE w/ RSVP

Even if you've never heard of Plant, you should know that the New York label/DJ lounge/production house has had a major effect on the Big Apple's 21st-century musical resurgence. Plant's punk disco vision was laid out on 2003's The Sound of Young New York compilation (think DFA, the Rapture, Metro Area), and is advanced by TSONY 2, which hits stores in August. To celebrate, Plant's resident DJ Dominique is bringing members of New York's 2nd Wave to the Standard Downtown's rooftop pool party, also featuring DJ sets by members of Elefant and Ambulance LTD and a live set by the Fever. (PO)

MULTIMEDIA
Six Degrees Music and Arts Festival

when: Sun 8.1 (6pm-midnight)
where: 1329 E 6th St (Downtown, 213.225.5934)
price: $15
links: Event Info

What would happen if you took the best of LA alternative art/music culture and let it marinate in a massive (over 20,000 square feet) downtown installation/performance space? The Six Degrees festival, that's what. From the edgiest, savviest art collectives — like Cannibal Flower and Create:Fixate, already notorious for their shindigs — to forward-looking dance floor tribes like dublab and Proper, Six Degrees presents a true meeting of minds and behinds. Don't miss the neo-acid-jazz trippy turntablist funk of Josh One. (MD)

Note: Six Degrees kicks off Sat 7.31 (6pm-2am); if you purchase an advance ticket for $15, it's good for both days.

MUSIC: Experimental Rock
HiM w/ Mice Parade

when: Sun 8.1 (6:30pm)
where: The Echo (1822 Sunset Blvd, Echo Park, 213.413.8200)
price: $10
links: Event Info

Multi-instrumentalists Doug Scharin (the main man behind HiM) and Adam Pierce (ditto, for Mice Parade) are omnivorous music heads, traversing the universe and trying to adapt every new sound they hear. For the most part they succeed, combining the a*ss-shaking forces of world-wise rhythms (everything from dub to Afrobeat to samba) and the headspace of improvisation (equal parts free jazz, psychedelic exploration, and electronic minimalism) to attract an audience of both multiculti hippies and grad students. Expect both sets to do the stoned sway gingerly as Scharin and Pierce assist each other in recreating their all-encompassing musical visions. (PO)

DJ: House
Ron Trent

when: Sun 8.1 (8pm)
where: Sixteen Fifty (1650 Schrader Blvd, Hollywood, 323.960.2088)
price: $15 / $10 before 11pm
links: Event Info | Ron Trent

What a difference a decade makes. In 1990, Ron Trent created the proto-tech house masterpiece "Altered States," a classic of Chicago acid dance-floor starkness. In the years that followed, Trent dropped the 303s for flutes, moved to New York, and started carrying the torch for the jazzy deep house revolution in his legendary Giant Step weekly. Trent never lost sight of the groove, and today remains as funky as he is smooth and musical, so don't miss this rare West Coast appearance of a Windy City 4/4 innovator. (MD)

What record label did Ron Trent found in 1993? The third, sixth, ninth, 10th, and 12th correct answers each win a pair of tickets.

ART
Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes

when: Now through Thur 8.5 (Tue-Sat: 10am-6pm / Sun: 12-4pm)
where: Cartelle Gallery (310 Washington Blvd, Marina del Rey, 310.574.9689)
price:  FREE
links: Event Info

For the artists in this ambitious group show, surface is everything. Swiss artist Thierry Feuz dominates the gallery with his forceful yet delicate incorporation of botany, psychedelia, and diverse painting techniques. Ron Reihel's classic, subtle works surprise by absorbing and emitting ambient light. Andy Moses proves that one color at a time can easily tell a whole human story. Philippa Blair attacks her surfaces with zeal, vibrant, saturated colors, and expressive brushwork. Jimi Gleason's paintings are subtle and lyrical, with a profound narrative lurking beneath their smooth surfaces. The overall effect is a dreamy, sensual satisfaction rather than an academic abstraction. (SND)

MUSIC: Rock 'n Roll
Jonathan Richman

when: Mon 8.9 - Wed 8.11 (8pm)
where: Tangier Restaurant (2138 Hillhurst Ave, 323.666.8666)
price: $13
links: Tangier Restaurant

With nothing more than a fuzz pedal, a Fender Stratocaster, and a deadpan drummer with a two-piece kit, Jonathan Richman can bring you from tears to belly laughs and back again. Known by most as the crooner in There's Something About Mary, Richman possesses an amazing capacity for sincerity while singing about the most unlikely muses (special favorites include roadrunners, lesbian bars, and Harpo Marx's musical interludes). In his early years he fronted the thunderous Modern Lovers, but a trip to the Caribbean taught him to mellow out, lose the pomposity, and play from the heart. (JCF)

Original Modern Lovers Jerry Harrison and David Robinson went on to join which two new wave bands? Third and fifth correct answers each win a pair of tickets.

ART
100 Artists See Satan

when: Now through Sun 9.19 (times)
where: Cal State Fullerton Grand Central Art Center (125 N Broadway, Santa Ana, 714.567.7233)
price:  FREE
links: Event Info

Organized to coincide with the more academic 100 Artist See God (see below) at the Laguna Art Museum, this exhibition aims to give the Evil One a voice in the debate. With work in every conceivable media and by artists ranging from unknowns to superstars, this should pretty much do it. Highlights include work by the Reverend Ethan Acres, Terry Allen, Van Arno, Gary Baseman, Sandow Birk, Chris Burden, Joe Coleman, R. Crumb, Alex Gray, Don Ed Hardy, George Herms, Llyn Foulkes, Frank Kozik, Charles Krafft, Barry McGee, Kenny Scharf, Shag, Ed Rushca, Mark Ryden and Robert Williams. (SND)

ART
100 Artists See God

when: Sun 8.1 - Sun 10.3 (11am-5pm)
where: Laguna Art Museum (307 Cliff Dr, Laguna Beach, 949.494.8971)
price: $9
links: Event Info

Who exerts more influence on human existence, God or Satan? The much-anticipated inspiration for the Satan show in Santa Ana, finally opening at the Laguna Museum, aims to find out. Curated by Meg Cranston and John Baldessari, this exhibition takes a more academic approach than its cheekier counterpart — but don't assume these artists are lacking in attitude. Several are even represented in both shows. Expect works by John Waters, Chris Burden, Damien Hirst, Rebecca Horn, Paul McCarthy, Richard Prince, and Raymond Pettibon to, if not shock, at least awe. (SND)

Note: Opening reception Sat 7.31 (6pm)

When was the last time you saw God? Our three favorite answers each win a pair of tickets.

CD REVIEW: Captain Comatose, Picking Up
Playhouse
March 2004
$11 (Forced Exposure)

You'll be hard pressed to find a better summer day pick-me-up than Captain Comatose's Picking Up — if for no other reason than that the 11-track CD comes free with the four-track 12-inch of the same name. Khan and Snax offer up their disco/tech/pop hits to a motley crew of remixers like Munk, Electronicat, and Kiki & Silversurfer. The latter turn "Price Gun Baby" into a shuddering mess of triplets and shivering vocals while Playgroup, unsurprisingly, plays up the anti-gravity arpeggios. Snax's mix of "Don't Come Back" sounds like glam-slam Prince playing in a skipping CD player, and DFS's "Worst Remix Contest Winner Mix" of "$100" is a karaoke travesty that lives up to its name — except that it rocks. Leave it to Captain Comatose to inspire such a perverse Midas touch. (PS)

OBEY: Swindle Magazine
Culture mongers take note: Swindle Magazine — the new quarterly from celebrated street artist Shepard Fairey of Obey Giant — has launched, and it's looking quite slick. Touted as the definitive pop culture and lifestyle magazine for the young and avant-garde, Swindle offers forward-thinking coverage of art, fashion, and music, as well as exclusive photographs and illustrations by Fairey's favorite artists. Swindle also looks the part — if the hardcover, 160-page debut issue is any indication of what's to come, you better snag a copy now for safe keeping. (AM)

STREAMS: KCRW
Amateur DJs forever tethered to their home stereos can consider themselves off duty — all week long the KCRW crew curates the perfect soundtrack so you don't have to. Just as the lonesome night owl finds a comforting groove with Raul Campos's Nocturna program, the new sound junkie is kept in the off-the-beaten-path know with KCRW staple Weekend Becomes Eclectic. Finally, Sunday afternoons relax the body and stimulate the mind with the Latin-leaning world mix of Café LA. For those perennially expanding their already-varied CD collections, let KCRW do the dirty work, as they stream a broad, diverse array of music straight to your headphones. (ELM)
