Cultural Stimuli in LA Issue 228: categorical flavor
Sure, abstraction and boundary blurring are part of progressive art, but it's also nice to encounter culture that innovates by breaking old-school ideas into more modern, bite-sized bits. This week, American Ballet Theatre reinvigorates a slate of classics, as American Cinematheque's annual Mods & Rockers and Music Documentary screenings help illuminate and canonize our forebears' sonic subversions. Felt Club returns with another kitschtastic afternoon of knitting, decoupage, satire, and loud music; Chi Chi's Word Parlor gives writers, storytellers, and literary hams a platform for expressive verbiage; and the cavalcade of cinematic whimsy, weighty social commentary, and fabulous parties that is OutFest 2007 puts the "gay" back in "gay old time." Elsewhere, the adorable/alarming drawings in Travis Millard's Hey Fudge reinforce the age-old archetype of the artist as mad genius, and the urban grafwork of Joe Joe Webb prove that street artists and the classic canvas techniques aren't enemies after all. Just this once, go ahead and judge a book by its cover — and spread it.

Absolutely Fabulous
In addition to screening the best in new gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender cinema, this year's massive OutFest also boasts some of the most jubilant premiere parties and after-screening soirées this town has ever seen — and that's saying something.

Travis Millard's playfully subversive images of awkward kids, slumpy monsters with swirling limbs, and nerdy old guys sporting hiked-up trousers may focus on the off-putting and eccentric, but there's also a rogue factor at work: adorability. While Millard's sad little faces should inspire a certain subdued revulsion, they're instead met with oohing and out-loud awws. Tonight's launch party celebrates the release of Hey Fudge, a new work for Millard's Fudge Factory Comics packed with trademark characters. For its part, Jeff Electric — which, to the heartbreak of art lovers everywhere, is in the midst of its final series of artsy throwdowns — offers mariachis and refreshments. (LMK)

Nobody can accuse Queen Latifah of stagnation: the Hollywood hyphenate climbed the hip-hop hierarchy in the '90s, went on to earn critical crowns on Broadway, and then took on the silver screen — earning an Oscar nod for her performance in Chicago). Relegating rap to the back door, the Queen's last disc, The Dana Owens Album, ventured into new, more mature territory, working a sultry set of standards with breathy jazz vocals. Tonight, Latifah (aka Dana Owens) makes her Hollywood Bowl debut, unleashing the dramatics in a performance showcasing her mastery of jazz, blues, and hip-hop. osseus labyrint: Trace Evidence
Founded by Hannah Sim and Mark Steger, dance and performance duo osseus labyrint has spent the last 15 years dedicated to the study of human evolution. Breaking down gender barriers and exploring the outer edges of artistic expression, their works test the limits of the mind — not to mention the body — with unique, and often unnerving, reimaginings of the human form. The duo uses nude, lithe limbs and rigorous contortions to create live shows that recall Japanese butoh tradition with a Kafkaesque delight. Tonight, Bert Green Fine Art debuts the group's first art exhibition, a series of transcendent (if a little off-putting) images capturing the duo's wild and shocking creations. (AP/LeK)

Joshua Clay has made a name painting big-eyed girls and urban landscapes — striking imagery, but a bit obtuse. In Shadows, he digs a little deeper, exploring the internal lives of his characters in addition to their stunning aesthetics. The artist illuminates the unspoken experiences that linger after his figures have passed, illuminating the often-ignored shadows of bad choices, relationship baggage, family dysfunction, lies, and rationalizations of lust and greed. The result leaves one with the unwavering impression that these are the kinds of images we need to understand if we hope to advance beyond the current construct of alienated urbanity. (JF)

Os Mutantes w/ Busdriver
There are reunion tours, and then there are reunion tours. Last year's re-formation of this stone-cold Brazilian group of tropicália superstars was truly an event. Back in the '60s, these beach bums folded lilting samba, fuzzy guitars, and homemade effects, dropping everything but the kitchen sink into a superbly sunny psych-pop sound that has been imitated but never equaled. The only downfall of this second coming is the absence of original singer Rita Lee. But even without their summery siren (who, last time around, was more-than-ably replaced by Brazilian singing sensation Zélia Duncan), the Baptisa brothers and drummer Dinho Leme alone are well worth the asking price. David Vandervelde and the Moonstation House Band w/ Blitzen Trapper
A recent review of Blitzen Trapper's critically adored album Wild Mountain Nation compared the Portland sextet's swirling, lethargically stunning approach to slack-rock godfathers Pavement. The band exemplifies a bit of '70s, end-of-the-dial stoner country, too, its lazy harmonies and watercolored images pairing with surprisingly potent guitar riffs. David Vandervelde takes a similarly eccentric, classic-rock approach to his work — which feels like a live remix of our parents' music — taking the best elements of yesteryear and building beautiful monsters. Oh My God

Chicago-bred trio Oh My God craft funk-disco-soul ditties that veer wildly between Adderall-fueled power pop and plaintive, My Chemical Romance-style ballads. Each razor-sharp song shimmers and shines with perky organ hooks, off-kilter bass lines, and freaktastic drumming. It's sort of a gimmicky approach, but these genre-mashers just want to rock out, no matter what the damage. And tonight they do just that, shaking the Mint with tunes from their recently released fifth album, the boisterous Fools Want Noise. Indeed they do. (SN)

Howlin' Rain's debut seemed to indicate a second coming of the Black Crowes, rocking laidback Southern sounds alongside fierce NorCal guitar squalls. The band's followup sees Ethan Miller, of Comets on Fire fame, developing his vocal and guitar prowess in a batch of heavy, psychedelic jams with all the mountain-girl snogging, face-stealing vibes of early-'70s Grateful Dead. It looks like these guys are on the verge of something huge, so hide a stash in your beard and put some flowers in your hair, because this long, strange trip is only just getting started. (DRC)

Check One... Two returns this week, rocking the socks off the Viper Room with a slate of up-and-coming LA locals. Harking to indie rock's '80s heyday, the Happy Hollows' terror-tinged twee coalesces with jabby art-rock riffs as coos wash over the audience in breathy bursts. Thailand's slightly skewed pop is far less precious: taking a more straight-ahead rock route, the band's glittery midtempo rockers are underscored by driving beats and street-savvy vocals brimming with "Cali" cool. Bending basic electronics to devious dance-pop ends, Hearts of Palm UK win the twee-pop prize as Erica Elektra's soft, lilting vocals fall over cutesy electronics and bouncy bass. (AP)

CD REVIEW: James Blackshaw, The Cloud of Unknowing |
Tompkins Square
Released June 2007
$13.99 (Insound)
James Blackshaw is referred to so often in the media as "24-year-old guitarist James Blackshaw," it's like he's a whippersnapper getting carded at the old-timey convalescents' bar. Despite his age, the 12-stringer plays with the assurance and ingenuity of an elder master on The Cloud of Unknowing; decorating melodies with high-pitched twings, guiding songs from introspective to uplifting as though his fingers possessed infinite wisdom about the human condition. "Cloud Collapse" billows smokey Eastern mysticism behind bells and lingering plucked notes. But there's something distinctively British about Blackshaw's playing, as he channels Old English balladry, fusing it with Fairport Convention over an extended Jack Rose ramble. The closer, "Stained Glass Windows," suggests the spiritual ascension of hallowed ground, morphing a simple phrase into twinkling tonal upticks before crumbling into scraped-string cacophony. And he's only 24. (MaG)
