Cultural Stimuli in LA
Issue 210: private flavor

Between hectic work schedules and overflowing social calendars, your average Angeleno doesn't get a lot of time to just sit down and think things over. This week, artists and performers do it for us, opening their minds — and diaries — to explore the boons and burdens of introspective analysis. Elika Burns' Home Despair addresses the dangers of spending too much time by yourself; painters Sylvia Ji and Joshua Petker give audiences a peek at what goes on Behind Bedroom Doors; and mockumental theater piece Inside Private Lives re-imagines the isolation of celebrity. Elsewhere, Ladyhawk deploy hard-rocking musings on life's tribulations, and the Moth StorySlam invites narrators to share their most harrowing yarns of workplace woe. Remember, you don't have to be alone to appreciate alone time, so be sure to spread it.

- Shana Nys Dambrot, Managing Editor

LECTURE
Guy Maddin: Goat Glands, Carpet Underlay, and Cinema Sat Backwards

when: Tue 3.6 (7:30pm)
where: Otis College Forum, Ahmanson Building (9045 Lincoln Blvd, Westchester, 310.846.2579) map
price:
links: Event Info | Otis

An inspired arbiter of the arcane, director Guy Maddin recently took to the helm of UCLA's new Billy Wilder Theater as the inaugural guest for the new "Curated by..." series. Known for films that mix art-house surrealism with grainy, silent visuals, Maddin selected seven similarly out-there movies for the series — including Caught (1949), Ministry of Fear (1944), and The Godless Girl (1929). Maddin will be on hand for several of the film presentations, but the pièce de résistance for fans is his discussion of the inner psyche of the artist this evening at Otis. (LLT)

MUSIC: Latin Rock
Zoe w/ Los Abandoned

when: Tue 3.6 (8pm)
where: Knitting Factory (7021 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, 323.463.0204) map
price: $20
links: Event Info | Zoe | Los Abandoned

Crooning in Southern-Cali Spanglish, Lady P leads post-punk Latin-rock quartet Los Abandoned with a faye fury, combining the smooth moves of Morrissey with the off-the-wall antics of Latina entertainment icons like Charo. The band's debut, Mix Tape, offers a similarly potent mix of ferocity and fun. Shaping the new sound of Latino rock, Mexico City-based five piece Zoe's bittersweet melodies and simmering guitars show an affection for '90s Britpop — a connection made more tangible through Phil Vinall's (Elastica, Pulp) production on last year's Memo Rex Commander y el Corazón Atómico de la Vía Láctea. Adventures in Kazakhstan Exhibition Talk

when: Wed 3.7 (7pm)
where: SCI-Arc Library (960 E 3rd St, Downtown, 213.613.2200) map
price:
links: Event Info

While recent press on Abu Dhabi's proposed multi-billion dollar cultural Xanadu has eclipsed most other discussions of architecture in urban spaces, SCI-Arc's recently opened Adventures in Kazakhstan exhibition offers a welcome corrective. Not at all related to Borat (best we get that out of the way), this exhibit presents the design entries from celebrity firms Zaha Hadid and LA-based Eric Owen Moss in an invitational competition to transform the Republic Square in Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan. Tonight Moss discusses the work on view and what it would mean for the country's vibrant cultural community. (CA)

OPERA
Recovered Voices

when: Wed 3.7 & Sat 3.10 (7:30pm)
where: Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (135 N Grand Ave, 213.972.7219) map
price: $15-125
links: Event Info

During the Holocaust, many compositions were branded degenerate, or entartete musik, by the Nazis, and, as a result, the composers that made them were marginalized or killed. In an inspired (and inspirational) new series, LA Opera's Recovered Voices resurrects their forgotten masterpieces, giving new voice to works like Franz Schreker's Die Gezeichneten (The Stigmatized) and Walter Braunfels' Die Vogel (The Birds). Debuting tonight, the series' two shows also feature complete performances of Alexander Zemlinsky's Eine florentinische Tragödie (A Florentine Tragedy), a one-act opera based on the Oscar Wilde play. (JH)

Of all the great artists decried as degenerates, which is your favorite and why? The two best defenses in 50 words or less each win a pair of tickets to the 3.7 or 3.10 performance.

Where Did Our Love Go?

when: Thur 3.8 - Sun 3.11 (schedule)
where: REDCAT (631 W 2nd St, 213.237.2800) map
price: $8

A companion film series to MoCA's WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution exhibition, Where Did Our Love Go? explores the impact of '70s and '80s female filmmakers on contemporary cinema. Chief among tonight's entries is Barbara Loden's Wanda (1970), the portrait of a depressed divorcée trying to eke out a living in Pennsylvania coal country. The series also screens contemporary films exploring the era's cultural climate, including movies addressing the malaise of the post-Tiananmen Square generation of Chinese youth, a profile of jazz trumpeter Clora Bryant, and Anna Miller's Viva — a campy, critical examination of '60s and '70s sexploitation cinema. Canadian quartet Ladyhawk makes bitter roots music, leveling frustrated rants about bitchy moms, promiscuous ex-girlfriends, and the importance of keeping a jackknife close at hand. While the band shares the odor of nicotine and pessimism exuded by buds in Black Mountain, Ladyhawk's most obvious forebears are really the Replacements: they're the same sort of rude drunkards, and, like the original college-rock bad boys, they make it look fun to drink beer for breakfast. The band plays tonight alongside road-weary singer/songwriter Chris Bathgate, Sacramento garage-rockers Bright Light Fever, and Polyvinyl poppers Saturday Looks Good to Me. (DRC)

Footsteps, a creaking door, a few whispers — that's all we hear, but it can't be all that's going on. In Behind Bedroom Doors, Sylvia Ji and Joshua Petker examine sacred moments, both mythologized and mundane, that unfold in the rooms where women go to sleep. Based on models from godsgirls.com (not safe for work!), Ji and Petker's paintings do more than glance through the crack in the keyhole: they throw the door wide open, capturing fleeting romanticism of women in their most intimate moments. Both artists are unique in style but similar in their notion of the imperfect, a shared sense which creates sensual works of fleeting beauty that deconstruct the decayed ideals of love. (MSS)

Note: This exhibition remains on display through Fri 4.6 (Thur-Sun: 1-6pm).

MUSIC: Pop Rock
Everybody Else

when: Fri 3.9 (9pm)
where: Safari Sams (5214 W Sunset Blvd, 323.666.7267) map
price: $10
links: Event Info | Everybody Else

Though Everybody Else's MySpace page proclaims the band a rock/indie/alternative act, "uber-pop" would be a lot more accurate. That's not to lessen their street cred, of course: they got their name from a Kinks b-side after all. The LA locals perform shame-free tunes that are as appealing and clever as the band itself (seriously, lead singer Carrick Gerety is a recent Harvard grad). Their self-titled debut, produced by Rick Parker (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Sugarcult), doesn't come out until April, but it's already getting airplay everywhere. Catch the contagious band tonight for an early advance on the next big buzz. (JH)

when: Sat 3.10 (7pm)
where: The Smell (247 S Main St, 213.625.4325) map
price: $8
links: Event Info | Old Time Relijun

Half slappy neo-no wave, half swagger-happy cowpunk, alien rockers Old Time Relijun ax aggressively, hacking at traditional modes of composition until there's nothing left but the stump. Minimalists of a rare, ultra-energetic type, the band shakes the shatooby out of simple riffs, bumping and swaying to slow-plunking tom-tom beats, as trebly guitars spike in and out of sparse, stringy bass lines. Lead singer Arrington De Dionyso also sways backs and forth: at times his guttural grunt is demonlike; at others he drops the raw, high-pitched squeals of a boozed-out Gordan Gano. While the band's early career was defined by loose, often alienating antics, they've tightened things up just enough to sneak their way safely out of the Smell tonight. (AP)

How many full-length cassettes did De Dionyso self-record and release between the years of 1989 and 1995? The first three correct responses each win a pair of tickets to this show, an Old Time Relijun CD, and a poster.

when: Sat 3.10 (9pm)

Portland's Menomena stumble into the Echo tonight, touting a series of shambling but surprisingly elegant indie-pop symphonies. Simultaneously powerful and driven, refreshing and breezy, the band's Spiritualized-inflected, glitch-looped, organ-layered pop songs are intricate, crystalline compositions with glimmering, shifting layers. No word on whether they plan to bring the requisite choir along, but, either way, the band's tinkling piano, galloping drums, and heavenly synth layers are a welcome break from all the sludgy guitar rockers dominating the Sunset Strip. (LMK)

Lo-fi god John Darnielle (aka the Mountain Goats) made his name on inspired minutiae, drawing the drama out of fictitious forays and cracked-out caricature. But, after a decade telling the tales of Chinese house flowers and the best-ever death-metal band out of Denton, Darnielle has gotten sick of well-worded fiction. His recent record, Get Lonely, is a serious attempt at unfiltered soul-bearing, an honest account of real-world heartbreak and regret. On the road, Darnielle's mid-tempo acoustic-driven tunes hit harder, as the singer steps up the energy, layering his tinny, nasal vocals with reckless, almost creepy aggression. (AP)

While the world was rightfully excited by the number of non-US nominees for this year's Oscars, foreigners aren't exactly a new thing at the Academy Awards. Not only was he nominated, but, three years ago, Uruguayan performer Jorge Drexler actually won one. Unfortunately, his music was so under the radar at the time that he wasn't invited to perform his nominated soundtrack song in person (it was done by Antonio Banderas and Carlos Santana instead). Back amongst people who recognize a world-renowned musician when they see one, Drexler gets the high-roller treatment he deserves as the Walt Disney Concert Hall hosts an evening of elegant acoustic song. The dark sounds start small, echoing from the speaker, but soon, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden comparisons are hard to resist. Of course, while the Sword's precision riffs and insane progressions are reminiscent of old-school heavy hitters, they also assault the '70s-metal sound, teetering methodically between unique modes of mayhem and more pleasing chords. Unlike many new-school rockers, the Sword offers a metal set you can enjoy in its entirety, without suffering through too many unnecessarily mellow moments. And, if you're harboring a secret hesher inside, the band's haunting aggression is sure to inspire a little aggro as well. (MSS)

  CD REVIEW: !!!, Myth Takes

Warp Records
Released March 2007
$11.99 (Insound)

Rather than search for lyrical significance in the dense, multilayered tracks of Myth Takes, !!!'s third full-length album, you'd do better to just give yourself over to its explosive assault. As frontman Nic Offer spouts prose in the same nonsensical style that marked past albums, the eight-piece outfit behind him grows ever-more potent, shaking the floor with Liquid Liquid-style dance-punk beats and wild, funky riffs. The tribal percussion of "All My Heroes Are Weirdos" mirrors Talking Heads' more Afropop-inspired moments, while glossy bumper "Heart of Hearts" is melodic, muscular, and even radio-ready. "Bend Over Beethoven," meanwhile, may be the band's finest moment since classic 2003 single "Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story)," offering more nuance (and excitement) in eight minutes than other bands do on entire albums. (JPC)

  STREAMS: Beats in Space

Fresh off a #1 ranking on Resident Advisor's DJ charts — a feat for any selector — Tim Sweeney returns for his weekly jaunt on WNYU's Beats in Space. In an ideal world, it would be available on satellite radio (listen up XM and Sirius!), but until it is, you can visit the show's website for podcasts and streams. Recent sessions include a punk-funk sci-fi disco mix from Padded Cell's Richard Sen and a set by Tigersushi's Joakim in support of his latest album, Monsters & Silly Songs. Phil South — of NYC's famed No Ordinary Monkey parties — also stopped by, dropping dub and an eclectic blend of tripped-out dance music. (CJN)
