Cultural Stimuli in LA
Issue 193: sampled flavor

Mix and match Whitman's Sampler-style this week as LA pops the box on an eclectic array of cultural candy. Theatre of NOTE presents its new late-night short-play program, A Lick and a Promise, while the new Wight Gallery at UCLA hosts Anxiety of Influence — a group exhibition of MFA student work from an assortment of national art programs — and the 2006 West Coast Art & Antiques Fair lays out a litany of old-fashion objects. Elsewhere, Ima Robot and Droidbehavior battle for title of Dance Floor's Funkiest Android (fortunately not on the same night); experimental Bay Area band Loop!Station rock the Temple Bar crowd with nothing but a cello, a voice, and a feedback system; and, for those brave enough to combine scissors, crazy glue, and happy hour, the Echo hosts monthly arts 'n crafts klatch Felt Club. Before you head out, though, there's one more choice you have to make — it's Election Day today, and the polls are open late. Democracy is like Lotto: you can't win if you don't play, so spread it.

Waiting for Beckett
One of the 20th century's best-known playwrights, Samuel Beckett ushered in the modern age of theatre with trademark wit and dark whimsy. This year marks his 100th birthday, and UCLA honors the milestone with a two-week festival featuring the writer's most revered works.

MUSIC: Blipified
Loop!Station w/ Chris Pierce and AM

when: Tue 11.7 (9pm)
where: Temple Bar (1026 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, 310.393.6611) map
price: $10
links: Event Info | Loop!Station

Robin Coomer and Sam Bass were just another pair of classically trained musicians playing in rock bands before they discovered the joy of the Loop Station, the digital sampling machine that became their inspiration, and, consequently, their namesake. These days, their whole performance is sculpted around a semi-improvisational live loop that creates a chill-inducing, abstract tapestry. Coomer's soaring, hypnotic voice cuts wide sonic swaths across it as Bass' cello catches fire. The band plays tonight with beloved LA local singer/songwriter AM. (SND)

What is the expected battery life for a Boos RC-20 Loop Station? The first two correct responses each win a pair of tickets to this show.

MUSIC: Roots Reggae
Rocky Dawuni w/ Joseph Israel

when: Wed 11.8 (9pm)
where: Malibu Inn (22969 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, 310.456.6060) map
price: $10
links: Event Info | Rocky Dawuni | Joseph Israel

A familiar face to fans of Zanzibar's weekly Afro-Funke' boogie ritual, Rocky Dawuni recently entered into semi-stardom by rocking a cameo on Showtime's Weeds. For many musicians this would be a tough transition, but he's used to the gritty glitz and glamour. As the host of Afro-Funke', Dawuni has become an LA institution, boasting the best boogie party around, and, while the camera is a harsh mistress, the dance floor is much more demanding. In a return to his true form, the reggae impresario gets happy in Malibu tonight alongside brother-in-soul Joseph Israel. (AP/SND)

LECTURE
Roger Gastman: The Name Game: Graffiti Past and Present

when: Thur 11.9 (7:30pm)
where: Otis College, Ahmanson Bldg (9045 Lincoln Blvd, Westchester, 310.665.6905) map
price:
links: Event Info

Tracing graffiti's evolution from underground movement to pop-culture phenomenon is almost as tricky as scurrying up a freeway sign, can in hand (how the heck do they do that, anyway?). Graf artists Roger Gastman, Caleb Neelon, and LA's legendary SABER lend their unique perspectives on the movement tonight, expounding on the past and exploring the ways that the culture continues to reshape itself. These guys would know: they all merged into a discipline that was largely chastised by mainstream artistic tradition and continue to maintain their original ethos. (MSS)

PERFORMANCE
Goody-B. Wiseman

when: Thur 11.9 (7:30pm)
where: Orange County Museum of Art (850 San Clemente Dr, Newport Beach, 949.759.1122) map
price:
links: Event Info | Goody-B. Wiseman

For the OC Biennial, Goody-B. Wiseman plays straight man to her own wickedly funny brand of sincerely sarcastic multimedia art, creating an elaborate anthropological investigation of a tribe of children raised by animals in the California desert. From Badger Bear to Gazelle Girl, the misadventures in captivity and disastrous attempts to socialize this cache of feral adolescents are described in video documents, naive dioramas, and through faux-artifacts and diaries. Tonight she discusses, and hopefully reenacts, aspects of the project. Be prepared to ride the profound implications of her metaphors all the way to crazy town. (SND)

MUSIC: Suicide Punk
Xiu Xiu w/ Congs for Brums, Dirty Projectors, and Grouper

when: Thur 11.9 (8:30pm)
where: The Echo (1822 Sunset Blvd, Echo Park, 213.413.8200) map
price: $12 / $10 advance
links: Event Info | Xiu Xiu

Music sites like iTunes may classify Xiu Xiu's music as "Alternative & Punk," but that hardly does the band's ambient, schizophrenic sound justice. Incorporating the post-punk aesthetic of Joy Division and an indie-electronic progressiveness mirrored by bands like Broken Social Scene and the Books, Xiu Xiu can be quite the coquette, offering a xylophonic paean one minute and the sounds of a dying accordion the next. But, despite the band's penchant for Ian Curtis-worthy vocals and instrumentation that mimics cell-phone interference, they're far more fun than they'd have you believe — especially when playing sweetly titled songs like "Saint Pedro Gluestick" and "The Pineapple vs. The Watermelon." (EJ)

Which two jobs did Xiu Xiu frontman Jamie Stewart have prior to the band? The third, fourth, and fifth correct responses each win a pair of tickets to this show.

FILM
Climates

when: Opens Fri 11.10
where: Various locations
price: Various
links: Climates

With his penchant for Antonioni-like long shots and impenetrable silences and characters, Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Distant, 2002) has established himself as an auteur who writes, shoots, edits, and even produces his films in order to stamp his thumbprint across each frame. In his most recent, Climates, he also lends his dolorous onscreen presence as a professor whose marriage to a younger television producer is crumbling. Though the film relies too heavily upon its meteorological metaphor, its moody grandeur — sweeping vistas intercut with grapplings on hardwood floors and crackling cigarettes — evokes all too well the suffocating, lovely misery of a relationship on its last legs. (LR)

DJ
ESL Night feat. Thunderball and Ursula 1000

when: Fri 11.10 (9pm)
where: Zanzibar (1301 5th St, Santa Monica, 310.451.2221) map
price: $20
links: Event Info | Thunderball | Ursula 1000

Fighting dance-party stereotypes for over a decade, ESL Music's bands replace simple-minded dance drivel with cosmopolitan sounds that mesh the best of jazz, dub, bossa nova, and downtempo. It might send the lame-o shiny shirts and spiky haired kids packing, but their eclectic sounds are a blessing to everyone else. Eclectic duo Thunderball, a label mainstay, keep you guessing with funky grooves, Bollywood kitsch, and multilayered sounds harkening back to the '60s and '70s. Loungecore rock star Ursula 1000, another label favorite, traverses an equally retro path, doling out space-age style funk, glam-rock, and soulful house. (MG)

Which ESL band's music has been featured on both Alias and Viva La Bam? The first three correct responses each win a pair of tickets to this event.

MUSIC: Electropop
Ima Robot

when: Fri 11.10 (9pm)
where: The Roxy Theatre (9009 Sunset Blvd, W Hollywood, 310.278.9457) map
price: $15
links: Event Info | Ima Robot

Helmed by self-proclaimed Hollywood "wild child" Alex Ebert and sidekick Timmy Anderson, LA electropop outfit Ima Robot has been (jokingly) described as a cross between Carrot Top and a car horn. The musical lovechild of Tiffany Brissette ("Vicky," the robot from the cult '80s television show Small Wonder) would be a somewhat more accurate description. Don't be afraid, though: the electric grooves that Ima Robot spin are infectious and rock-infused — picture Peaches fronting the Killers. Tonight the renaissance rockers perform new tracks from their hotly anticipated sophomore album, Monument to the Masses. (JH)

If you could have a robot perform any tedious task, what would it be and why? Our three favorite responses each win a pair of tickets to this show.

where: Aero Theatre (1328 Montana Ave, Santa Monica, 310.395.4990) map
price: $10
links: Event Info

From Mad Max's battles with sunburned barbarians in a postapocalyptic desert to Babe's barnyard adventures, George Miller is a champion of the empowered underdog (or underpig, as the case may be). He's also one of the most eclectic directors alive. This tribute starts off in the afternoon as Miller himself introduces a family friendly sneak preview of Happy Feet, a new animated musical about penguins. Later that night, it's a family-unfriendly double-feature presentation of Mad Max (1979) and The Road Warrior (1981), two of the most disturbing and fantastic action films of the last century. (DRC)

Miller might credit his ultrarealistic car wreck scene in Mad Max to what part of his background? The third correct response wins a pair of tickets to the screenings.

DESIGN
Cut & Paste Digital Design Competition

when: Sat 11.11 (8pm)
where: Rec Center Studio (1161 Logan St, 213.413.9300) map
price: $15 / $10 advance
links: Event Info

Like The Wizard, but with souped-up Macs and the city's best designers instead of Nintendo and nerdy preteens, Cut & Paste pits two players in a head-to-head showdown, with 15 minutes to turn a blank computer screen into a creative masterwork. Every mouse click and color choice is projected onto overhead screens, so the audience can witness each participant's process in real time. Whoever can navigate the tight deadline and drop his or her opponent's work into the desktop recycling bin walks away with a new laptop. Iron Chef: Adobe Illustrator, anyone? (PS)

Note: Arrive early (doors are at 7pm) for an hour of free beer.

where: The Echo (1822 Sunset Blvd, Echo Park, 213.413.8200) map

By far the hippest spot to ponder holiday gift swapping and semi-indulgent purchases, the Echo's monthly Felt Club mixes barroom bravado with knitting-circle kitsch in a craft fair where grandmas fear to tread. Promising one-of-a-kind baby booties, dandy accessories, and house gadgets that put Sharper Image to shame, the event's crafters are prescreened and come with the club's seal of approval. Picking up where googly-eyed seashell characters and doily creations left off, their crazy creations are sometimes brilliant, sometimes ridiculous, but almost always intriguing. And the baked goods are tasty, too. (MP)

when: Mon 11.13 (8pm)
where: REDCAT (631 W 2nd St, 213.237.2800) map
price: $8
links: Event Info

Unlike others in the recent wave of nonfiction films about Afghanistan, Meena Nanji's View from a Grain of Sand began filming in the pre-9/11 age. Using images from both before and after the fall of the Taliban, Nanji focuses on the struggles of three women, all of them refugees, in an attempt to capture the difficulty of the Afghani experience. Nanjii visited the women — a teacher, a physician, and a social activist — in Kabul and refugee camps in Pakistan. She combines the interviews with archival footage, creating a fascinating portrait of resilience. (DRC)

when: Mon 11.13 (10pm)
where: The Viper Room (8852 Sunset Blvd, W Hollywood, 310.358.1881) map
price: $10
links: Event Info | Sierra Swan

San Fernando singer Sierra Swan has been plugging her Linda Perry-produced debut, Ladyland, for over a year, and though the record has escaped mainstream success, it's a super spin. Live, Swan is an unforgettable experience: with raspy vocals and luscious piano-playing that evokes contemporary folkies like Fiona Apple and Tori Amos, the LA native turns out a show that's at times raw and, at others, delightfully ripe. Success may be slow-moving, but with Swan's pipes and onstage charisma, it must be just around the corner. Tonight, and every Monday night in November, Indie 103.1 presents the singer up close and personal at the Viper Room. (JH)

where: UCLA Freud Playhouse (McGowan Hall, 405 Hilgard Ave, Westwood, 310.825.2101) map
price: $28-60
links: Event Info

In the same way that Andy Warhol stirred the mid-'60s art world, Irish playwright Samuel Beckett stormed the stage with 1952's rebellious piece de resistance Waiting for Godot. The controversial play changed the face of contemporary theatre, and, in the process, proved Beckett's amazing insight into man's fragile and complex condition. UCLA Live celebrates the centenary of Beckett's birth with a number of the playwright's existentialist masterpieces, including a special presentation of Godot featuring the original director and much of the first Dublin cast. The Irish Times called this version (last performed in 1988) a "definitive reprise." (JH)

A VERY, VERY, VERY FINE HOUSE: Arts & Labor

Scott Marc Becker is a jack of all trades, and, like many independent artists and creative business people, he works from home. In an attempt to fuse his many interests — art, music, and big ideas — he recently turned his place into semi-public exhibition-and-project space Arts & Labor, displaying both his extensive and eclectic collection and a series of self-made multimedia installations. From the crushed glass sculpture and dynamic street photography displayed in the folksy modernist surroundings of his house to a relaunched website laden with writings, collected images, and conceptual ephemera, Arts & Labor is a mashed-up gem with distinct LA style.   CD REVIEW: Ecstatic Sunshine, Freckle Wars

Carpark Records
Released September 2006
$13.99 (Amazon)

Two dudes. Two guitars. That's it. Ecstatic Sunshine's minimalist head-scratcher Freckle Wars begs the question "where have all the guitar heroes gone?" Sure, you've got your anti-hero Thurstons and Malkmuses, but they're less technically "good" than they are "brilliant." Matthew Papich and Dustin Wong are legitimate six-string virtuosos, but the instrumentals on Freckle Wars are closer in spirit to a drum-less, vocal-less Deerhoof than Joe Satriani — drawing from nursery rhymes, made-up imaginary video-game soundtracks, and good ol' shambolic indie rock. The pair interweaves the delicately picked with the spazzy/noisy, playing off each others' motives with exquisite tightness and an ADD-like sense of pacing. The major-key sweet tooth of "Tuscan" says it all: syncopated arpeggios dance above a hyper-strummed power chord, shimmer gives way to discord, and a smile-inducing coda ties together a killer tune by one unexpectedly awesome rock band. (TG)

  STREAMS: Beats in Space

Fresh from touring Down Under, Tim Sweeney returns to Beats in Space with some of his strongest installments yet. Michael Mayer of Kompakt Records adapts his style to the eclectic spirit of the program, digging deep through his collection to pair the new electronic sounds espoused on his Immer 2 mix with classic helpings of disco and funk. Also, be sure to download new guest appearences from Optimo's JD Twitch — who turns in one of his typical sound- and genre-spanning mixes (helped along with the adroit use of Ableton Live) — as well as a recent set of must-hear rarities from Lovefingers.
