Cultural Stimuli in LA
Issue 167: joystick flavor

Though the Popular Mechanics kids might arm-wrestle us on this point, we think it's artists that best put new technologies to use. Backing us up, the E³ Video Game Expo brings the titans of the gaming industry to town this week, and while the main event is a little pricey, its offshoots are well within actual gamers' budgets. Dublab gets into the act, rocking an evening of projection art and Tetris tourneys. Meanwhile, downtown's Pharmaka Gallery confronts the not-always-seamless integration of technology into the realm of man and beast with Brave New World. Of course, some "tech" arrives devoid of wires and mainframes, like the handmade comfort of the new monthly arts and crafts-themed Felt Club, and the whammy-bar theatrics proffered by would-be CC DeVilles at the US Air Guitar Championship. On a more serious note, music lost a great talent and friend last month with the untimely death of LA's beloved DJ Dusk. This week's Prima Lux event will help support his family and keep his memory alive by compelling us to do what he would have wanted: dance. Love comes in analog and digital, so spread it.

flavorpill LA is an email magazine covering a hand-picked selection of music, art, and cultural events — delivered each Tuesday afternoon.

Wherever the week takes you, get there in style with the all-new Honda Fit. Fresh on the scene, this versatile performer is small on the outside, yet roomy on the inside. Smart features include an audio auxiliary jack, VTEC® engine, and enough safety features to keep you protected wherever you go. So don't just get there. Get there in the Fit!

Photoshop's Revenge
One of the highlights of this year's E3 Video Game Expo, Into the Pixel is an impressive (and, more importantly, free) group exhibition of digital art selected for its narrative impact and soaring imagination. No cheat codes neccessary.

Daily Updates

Tuesday TUE   WED   THUR   FRI   SAT   SUN   MON   ONG   FEAT

MUSIC: Pop/Rock
KT Tunstall

when: Tue 5.9 (9pm)
where: Henry Fonda Theatre (6126 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, 323.464.0808) map
price: $17.50
links: Event Info | Henry Fonda Theater | KT Tunstall

Pop singer/songwriter KT Tunstall doesn't need a reality TV show, a movie career, or a celebrity endorsement to make it — she has actual skill. On her debut album, Eye to the Telescope, the Scottish singer supplies pretty much everything herself, from vocals and backing harmonies to guitar and percussion. A welcome overachiever, Tunstall hearkens to a lost era defined by women like Rickie Lee Jones, Stevie Nicks, and Joni Mitchell — female touchstones of the music world that were more than lip-syncing fashion plates. Rock on, sister. (EJ)

When KT Tunstall was growing up, what two common electronic devices were consciously absent in her household? The first and third correct responses each win a pair of tickets to the show.

Into the Pixel

when: Wed 5.10 (5:30-7:30pm)
where: Los Angeles Convention Center Concourse Foyer (1201 S Figueroa Street) map

links: Event Info

The cognoscenti of the video game industry descend on downtown this week to witness the world's top game designers present their latest products and visions. Since only the gamer glitterati can afford the $500 registration fee, it's lucky for the rest of us that the Into the Pixel art exhibition is installed in the building's lobby and is free to the public. Using software as their medium, the show's 16 artists show off the surreal, creative possibilities of pixels. From fine art conceptualism to science fiction romanticism, these artists prove that Photoshop is good for more than removal of unsightly blemishes. (SN/SND)

Note: This exhibit remains on display for the duration of the E³ Expo 2006.

LECTURE
Christian Scheidemann: Breeding Dust: The Meaning of New Materials in Contemporary Art

when: Wed 5.10 (7pm)
where: UCLA Hammer Museum (10899 Wilshire Blvd, 310.443.7000) map
price:
links: Event Info

Founded in New York in 1920, the Société Anonyme was dedicated to introducing larger audiences to seminal 20th-century avant-garde artists such as co-founders Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp. This landmark exhibition draws on the remarkable collection of the society's third founder, Katherine Dreier, and features masterpieces by Kandinsky, Matisse, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Miró alongside work by a host of lesser-known but similarly talented contemporaries. In tonight's related lecture, scholar and conservator Christian Scheidemann discusses the challenges posed in the preservation of contemporary art composed with (and upon) non-traditional and even non-archival materials. (SND)

MUSIC: Space Punk
Psychic Ills w/ Indian Jewelry

when: Wed 5.10 (9pm)
where: Spaceland (1717 Silver Lake Blvd, 323.661.4380) map
price: $8
links: Event Info | Spaceland | Psychic Ills | Indian Jewelry

In the improvisational kosmische jams of New York City quartet Psychic Ills, the songs on the record are just a starting point. Whereas the best that most bands can promise is a particularly emotional rendition of your favorite song, these guys offer endless possibilities. When the spastic guitars hit the same groove as the organs and drums, the whole shebang — band, audience, bartenders — shifts and accelerates as one, and you feel the goose bumps rise as you realize that nobody knows where the noise is headed. (DRC)

What extra-sensory connection do the members of Psychic Ills claim to have with one another? The second and fourth correct responses each win a pair of tickets to this show.

ART: Opening
Brave New World

when: Thur 5.11 (6-9pm)
where: Pharmaka (101 W Fifth St, 213.689.7799) map
price:
links: Event Info

In Pharmaka Gallery's Brave New World — lovingly named after Aldous Huxley's classic sci-fi tome — established artists use collage, paint, etching, and drawing to explore the conflict between natural and synthetic worlds. The pictures range from Stas Orlovski's comfortable-looking flower sketches to the jarring surrealistic collage of George Herms. By exposing the rivalry between creatures of nature and man-made monsters, the artists mirror Huxley's satirical literary vision with similarly-minded imagery and, consequently, put those highfalutin machines in their place. (RM)

Note: This exhibit remains on display through Sat 7.1 (Wed-Sat: 12-6pm).

MUSIC: Alt-Folk
Keren Ann

when: Thur 5.11 (8pm)
where: Skirball Cultural Center (2701 Sepulveda Blvd, 310.440.4500) map
price: $25
links: Event Info | Keren Ann

Israeli-Dutch-Javanese-Russian Keren Ann Zeidel's bio has so many dashes, it reads like Morse code. And her music isn't any easier to break down. With four inspired albums under her belt — sung both in English and French — Zeidel has become an indie goddess without snipping at her global roots. All the better because it's her eclectic influences that inspire her distinct sound, a mingling of Euro-pop, trip-hop, and Jewish folk into comfortably familiar, yet delightfully new, creations. (RM)

What "happy accident" caused Keren Ann to adopt a more electronic sound on her Nolita album? The first, third, and fifth correct responses each win a pair of tickets to this show.

MUSIC: Indie Rock
John Vanderslice w/ Laura Veirs

when: Thur 5.11 (8:30pm)
where: The Echo (1822 Sunset Blvd, Echo Park, 213.413.8200) map
price: $12
links: Event Info | The Echo | John Vanderslice

John Vanderslice isn't your average singer/songwriter hiding behind a soft, shy voice, nor is he one to exude the pomp and swagger of today's indie-dance bands. Instead, the singer takes lessons from both, using his thick, bold voice as a tool to sing simple, poetic songs. And with rock instrumentation, orchestral elements, and catchy computer blips, Vanderslice sets an incredibly fresh foundation for his distinctive lyrics. The result reminds us that it's still possible to be a master songwriter without being a wuss. (DR)

What was the real-life inspiration for John Vanderslice's "Big Band Stars"? The first five correct responses each win a pair of tickets to this show.

FILM
Peter Sellers Double Feature: I Love You, Alice B. Toklas! (1968) and The Party (1968)

when: Fri 5.12 (7:30pm) & Sat 5.13 (3:45 & 7:30pm)
where: New Beverly Cinema (7165 W Beverly Blvd, 323.938.4038) map
price: $7
links: Event Info

Most people first experience Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau in Blake Edwards' Pink Panther films — a bridge to even more ingenious Sellers classics like Being There (1979) and Dr. Strangelove (1964). Eventually, the persistent fan discovers the subtle pleasures of his two 1968 films, The Party and I Love You Alice B. Toklas!. An Edwards project, The Party allows plenty of room for Sellers to floss his slapstick antics as a bumbling Indian movie star. Toklas!, on the other hand, sees Sellers playing an uptight attorney, inadvertently initiated into hippie culture by way of "special" brownies. (DRC)

DJ
Old School Rules feat. Afrika Bambaataa and Jazzy Jay

when: Fri 5.12 (9pm-3am)
where: Club So-Ho (333 S Boylston St) map
price: $25 / $20 advance
links: Event Info

The local luminaries in the Prima Lux crew rock another sure-to-please soiree, this time featuring members of the famed Zulu Nation crew. Widely recognized godfathers of hip-hop, these boys are sure to blaze the decks in this rare West Coast appearance. Zulu crew originators Afrika Bambaataa, Kool DJ Herc, and Jazzy Jay drop acetate bombs as the underground's own flock to the floor for a dose of hardcore hip-hop action. The evening features further jock support from new-school favorites Cut Chemist, Haul and Mason, and Blu Jemz. (AM)

Note: Proceeds from this event go to the family of the late, great DJ Dusk.

MUSIC: Indie Americana
Tom Brosseau Record Release Party

when: Fri 5.12 (10pm)
where: Tangier Grill (2138 Hillhurst Ave, 323.666.8666) map
price: $8
links: Event Info | Tangier Grill | Tom Brosseau

LA-based singer/songwriter Tom Brosseau makes country music to melt the hearts of even the iciest of the uberhip. Tonight marks the release of Empty Houses Are Lonely, a collection of "special recordings" from 2001 to 2003. It may be an anthology, but the record doesn't feel like a disjointed retrospective — the romance in Brosseau's earthy tenor, the elusive yet startlingly simple acoustic arrangements, and the soaring emotion in his poetic narratives are timeless. Live, stripped down to a guitar, a harmonica, and the occasional backing vocal, the meditative folksiness of Brosseau's music is all the more intense. (SND)

What is the official beverage of Brosseau's home state? The fifth, sixth, and seventh correct responses each win a pair of tickets to this show.

Don't deny it: Wayne and Garth were onto something. While their kaffeeklatsch did little for the stock price of the Flowbee, their basement broadcasts of air-guitar antics have inspired a generation of hipsters, stoners, and metalheads. Tonight's competition gives LA a chance to rock out alongside the likes of eccentric New York champ Björn Türoque and all his head bangin', hair thrashin' glory. And Fatima Hoang, 2005's winner, can kick out the jams like nobody's business. So dig up your inner Jimi or Joan and party on, dude. (CH)

price: $8
links: Event Info | Spaceland | Sunburned Hand of the Man

Seeing Sunburned Hand of the Man live is like catching Jerry Garcia and Ken Kesey at the peak of a bad acid test — the Massachusetts-based avant-folk jammers appear both evil and ecstatic. While anybody with enough psychoactive substances coursing through their brain can thrash about on a stage, Sunburned create a more aggressive psychedelic frenzy, flipping en masse from loose drum circles to heavy Melvins-style grooves. And though guitars, bass, and drums play a role, found instruments like sticks and horse-head masks are just as important to the band's shambolic sound. (DRC)

Sculptor and installation artist Tao Urban fills the Acuna-Hansen Gallery's main room with a hand-assembled structure of interlocking disks that looks like a child's toy from the land of giants. The intensity of color and dimension add a claustrophobic edge to playtime and make for a bright and lively investigation of the ways viewers interact with art. Danny Jauregui's black and white drawings, on the other hand, choreograph linear structures with inky washes that threaten to destabilize or obscure the depicted forms. In this way, the images make their own, more reserved contribution to the investigation of man's perception of space. (SND)

  HALCYON DAYS: Arthur Magazine

Arthur magazine is the last of a dying breed. A publication with no discernible demographic or target market, the free, bi-monthly journal muses on all facets of pop culture – politics, music, comics, and art – spanning the expanse of the cultural zeitgeist, from death metal to science fiction and eastern mysticism. The magazine's work is raw, thoughtful, and sometimes biting. Its outsider sensibility and high ideals hearken to the halcyon days of the '60s and '70s underground, when Lester Bangs was editing Creem and Rolling Stone was never to be found in a doctor's office. Past contributors include David Byrne, Thurston Moore, Spike Jonze, Art Spiegleman, and T-Model Ford. For those who can't find a newsstand, many articles are posted online, and the full issues are available as free downloadable PDFs from the website. (RS)

CD REVIEW: Gnarls Barkley, St. Elsewhere

Atlantic/Downtown
Released May 2006
$11.99 (Insound)

Best known for producing Gorillaz, as well as the Fab Four/Hova mashing of his Grey Album, producer Danger Mouse hooks up with ex-Goodie Mobster and freak-soul mainstay Cee-Lo for skewed hip-hop and R&B pop as Gnarls Barkley. Like Bergman's Persona, St. Elsewhere starts with a flickering film projector, foreshadowing the split personalities found later on. Already-hit single "Crazy" rubs disco strings and Chicago house up against dirty South soul, and Violent Femmes cover "Gone Daddy Gone" channels Devo for an oddball touch, but soon after, "Just A Thought" sucker punches the carefree vibes. This dark slice of neo-soul plays to the collaboration's strengths, with refreshingly honest lyrics, lamenting vocals, and galloping, chopped-up breaks, showing both conspirators at the height of their respective powers. (MW)

  MULTIMEDIA: BBC Collective

The ever-reliable folks over at the Collective continue to keep us plugged into new sounds, emerging cultural trends, and the latest media and live sessions. This week, check out a feature on the sub-bass sounds of dubstep — a genre that is just now starting to find a foothold in the clubgoer's consciousness, thanks to some forward-thinking DJs and producers. Also, attune your eyeballs to an interview with experimental-pop songstress Barbara Morgenstern, discussing her new album, The Grass Is Always Greener — the culmination of a yearlong world tour organized by Germany's Goethe-Institut. Finally, exorcise some devils with an a/v feature on Daniel Johnston, touted by many a rich musician as one of the world's greatest, and most underappreciated, living songwriters. (CJN)
