Cultural Stimuli in LA
Issue 123: mnemonic flavor

It's time to roll back your convertible top for a joyride down memory lane as the new traditionalists surge out of their dungen to reclaim the spotlight from indie advocates and gadget geeks. Sway to strains from your favorite old-skool video games, relive the era of leather noir with Judas Priest, and re-appreciate the glorious hairstyles of mods and rockers. Research strange ancient arts in the Feral House Archives, recapture the dog-eat-dog spirit of recess with a game of murderball, or remember those less fortunate at the justice ball. But most importantly, don't forget to enter our newly launched Flavorpack Contest to win a massive box of goodies — and spread it!

Smelvis Records Warped Tour Afterparty
|
|
With a nearly empty wallet and a head full of songs, new-school punker Elvis put together a DIY demo of his band Left Alone by simply tapping into the board at their first show at the Roxy. On that day in 1997, Smelvis Records was born. Left Alone headline tonight's afterparty (or pre-party, depending on which of the six SoCal Warped Tours you attend) alongside Spanish-speaking ska bands Matamoska and Viernes 13 as well as psychobillies Blackrome Phantoms. For ten bones, it's a cheap way for punk fans to get their fix between festivals. (JCF)

James Frey's My Friend Leonard is the touching and hair-raising story of a writer's rocky friendship with a fatherly but coke-headed mobster. The author of the drug addiction memoir A Million Little Pieces, Frey is no stranger to vice. In a possible display of solidarity, Lindsay Lohan showed up at his standing-room-only New York reading — so it's anyone's guess which celebs come out of the woodwork here. (TW)

Video Games Live

Now's the time to prove to your girlfriend that you spent your preadolescent years wisely, or at least in a way that was culturally relevant, with a night that celebrates the emblematic tunes of your youth: your favorite video game soundtracks. Each platform from 8bit to Xbox is represented with tunes as classic as the blurps and beeps from Pong to the contemporary symphonic overtures of Halo. While you attempt to stifle your geeky cheer, here are two words to put you over the edge: laser show. Add that to a live singing Donkey Kong, and you're in nerd nirvana. (JCF)
What was your favorite childhood video game and why? The five answers that push our buttons each win a pair of tickets to show performance.

Having graduated from the thickly bearded, unabomber-esque days of the Souljacker album, Eels frontman Mark Everett currently dons a suit and tie to stand before his audience as if it were a first date. With guitar in hand, and orchestra in his back pocket, he'll be appearing tonight on the Avalon's doorstep. This tour, entitled "The Eels with Strings," supports their pensive and spiritual latest album, Blinking Lights and Other Revelations. The intimacy of the record carries all the promises of a great live show. And, who knows, the Eels might even let you get to second base. (DR)

Tussle w/ Eats Tapes
|
|
Though Tussle's debut album, Kling-Klang, is a reference to the studio where German electronic pioneers Kraftwerk taught computers how to love, the band's influences range far beyond the Autobahn. The San Francisco group passes the usual post-punk and no-wave touchstones, weaving together a fresh, fluid combination of dub echoes, droney Krautrock rhythms, and funk shuffles. Tigerbeat6's Eats Tapes get the people dancing (or swaying, at least) with their lo-fi, acidic robo-house, complete with gleeful noise flourishes. (PCS/JL)

During the press' 16 years, Parfrey himself has amassed a truly astonishing personal collection of antiques and occult artifacts. Lyrics Born
|
|
The Tokyo-born, UC Davis-schooled MC once known as Asia Born used to go to great lengths to assert his individuality. These days it's pretty clear, from his involvement with DJ Shadow's Quannum collective to his recent abstract soul-hop remix album Same !@#$ Different Day, that Lyrics Born's work sets him far apart from the pack. Putting to use a host of obscure '70s bargain-bin finds, Lyrics Born's beats fasten his hyper-aware West Coast sensibility to richly colored tunefulness. More importantly though, those backing tracks — fancifully assembled by himself and friends including Dan the Automator and Dilated Peoples — provide a smooth ride for his overtly conscious lyrical ideas. Brazilian Girls' globe-trotting blend of dub, tropicalia, lounge, and electro-pop offers strong testament to the transportive power of music. But where the New York-based four piece intends to send listeners is left alluringly undefined. It could be Serge Gainsbourg's Paris; it could be Gotan Project's Buenos Aires; or it could be simply — as multilingual vocalist Sabina Sciubba suggests in her languid alto on the Girls' self-titled debut LP — "to the park to get some ice cream." The band's live show, all swaying hips and liberally flowing sweat, puts the audience at the confluence of a million sonic flight patterns. Get ready to feel sexy, and pack your passport. (JS)

About Olympic-level quadriplegic rugby players, Murderball is at once a backstage story, a reconciliation saga, a rehab drama, a classic sports documentary, and a crash course in how to convey a potentially maudlin topic with grace and humor. For the US team members, it's not as if just playing is winning, Special Olympics style. In their armored chairs, they are cyborg gladiators: part men, part machine, and completely out for blood. Each of them has already conquered so much internal strife in order to come to terms with his physical limitations that they radiate a Buddha-like equanimity right below the surface of their boys-will-be-boys bluster. The mixed media works of LA artist Maura Bendett are frozen moments of visual and physical chaos. Her hanging sculptures are like exploding chandeliers made of bright plastic, or static models of confetti showers. Their unlikely beauty and quirky, obsessive construction peg them as both funhouse fare and serious explorations of form and structure. In the project room are the paintings and works on paper from New Yorker Sydney Chastain-Chapman, whose chronicles of adventures of characters real and imagined serve as a kind of society page for her private, brightly lit fantasy world.

When a non-English-speaking band strikes a chord in the states — and it's not Sigur Rós — you best take note. Scandinavian psych-rockers Dungen swallow whole the vibe of the Zombies, the Hollies, the Creation, and anything Eric Burdon could dish up, only to flip the folk back fresher than ever. They plunge headlong into mind-expanding jamming only to emerge moments later with melodies so catchy, you'll think you momentarily learned Swedish. They left all New York's downtown hipsters panting for more last year, so don't miss the boat. (JCF)

Andreas Stevens (aka Greyboy) may not have invented acid jazz, but he was definitely one of its first poster boys. After cutting his teeth as a hip-hop DJ in the mid-'90s, Stevens found his footing through a partnership with sax luminary Karl Denson, laying the groundwork for the fusion of groove-heavy beats and live jazz that would become his trademark. Ten years after his groundbreaking underground hit Freestylin', the West Coast DJ is still running strong, lately venturing back to his more breakbeat-driven beginnings, as well as toward the roots of hip-hop: funk and soul. If you're unfamiliar with the folk revival of the '60s, then there are a lot of good books out there about great artists you've likely never heard of. The difference with Dave Van Ronk's tale is that he's one of the reasons those stories happened. As a founder of the New York folk scene, he had a unique perspective on nascent superstars Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, and, perhaps most interestingly, himself. Journalist Elijah Wald wrote the fascinating Narcocorrido on his own, and pays fitting tribute to his friend as the co-author of The Mayor of MacDougal Street, Van Ronk's autobiography. (DRC)

Though Jacqueline Susann called Hollywood's adaptation of her novel, Valley of the Dolls, "a piece of shit," there's so much to love about the 1967 celebration of booze and pills. As a tribute to Susann, an exclusive new print of the accidental camp classic is the festival highlight this Saturday, at the annual Mods and Rockers Film Festival. Also on the menu is a cocktail of brilliant and equally ridiculous masterpieces that were, well, beyond their time. Though he also had some success in other genres, director Robert Siodmak excelled in the film noir world of suspense and murder. The Spiral Staircase (1946) is about physically handicapped women being stalked by a serial killer in a Gothic mansion. The Dark Mirror (1946) focuses on twin sisters, one of whom is dangerously psychotic. His stories came from the dark end of the noir street: alongside prescient creepshows like Peeping Tom (1960), they foretold the perverse style of David Cronenberg and Dario Argento while holding their own against the comparatively subtle eccentricities of Samuel Fuller and Billy Wilder. CD REVIEW: Jamie Lidell, Multiply |
 |
|
Warp
Released June 2005
$13.99 (Amazon)
|
If not for its subtle, tech-y undertones and Jamie Lidell's decidedly Caucasian face on the cover, you could be forgiven for assuming Multiply is a lost compilation mining Otis, Marvin, and Stevie. A far cry from Lidell's techno-crooner work with Cristian Vogel as Super_Collider and the psychotic avant-garde collage of his 2000 solo debut, Multiply's stirring soul maintains the vintage warmth of its predecessors while emphasizing Lidell's shockingly authentic, virtuosic vocals and deft melodicism. Rhythms are intricately nuanced and, despite occasional studio trickery — such as the DJ Screw-style effects on "A Little Bit More" — the tastefully uncluttered production here perfectly complements the advanced tunesmithing. Not just a glowing tribute to American soul and R&B, Multiply is an earnest move into the future: one hand on a Hammond, the other on a laptop. (JCF)
Which two instruments did Lidell first learn to play back in the day? The eighth correct answer wins a copy of this CD.
