Cultural Stimuli in LA
Issue 113: shuffled flavor

If it's aural variety you're after, then Los Angeles is the place to be this week. We're importing smoking hot Norwegian jazz and bumping Brooklyn mash-up hip-hop; Ulrich Schnauss makes a special West Coast appearance, and local late-night fave Liza Richardson comes out to play. Art and film are not to be outdone, though, with more living dolls than a zombie honeymoon. From the grotesque to the burlesque, put it on random, hit the cruise control, and spread it!

flavorpill is an email magazine covering a hand-picked selection of music, art, and cultural events — delivered each Tuesday afternoon.

Almost every stage of our manufacturing and marketing happens in the same building in downtown Los Angeles.

This efficient, vertically integrated system means heightened quality control and greater flexibility, allowing us to respond faster than anyone who is outsourcing.

Our goal is to bring people the clothes they love to wear. This is how we do it.

Spotlight

Tuesday TUE   WED   THUR   FRI   SAT   SUN   MON   ONG   FEAT

MUSIC: Jazz
Tord Gustavsen Trio

when: Tue 4.26 (8 & 9:30pm)
where: Jazz Bakery (3233 Helms Ave, Culver City, 310.271.9039) map
price: $20
links: Event Info | Tord Gustavsen Trio

On the strength of two excellent releases on ECM, Norwegian Tord Gustavsen has been lauded as the new star of romantic jazz piano. His impressionistic playing is accompanied by a skilled rhythm section (drummer Jarle Vespestad and bassist Harald Johnsen), which pulses with a deft blend of familiarity and mystery, recalling the beauty of Bill Evans' work, as well as the more recent touchstone of Brad Mehldau. The young career of this northern light is in ascendance, so don't miss the chance to catch him before he really takes off. (PS)

What's the English title of Gustavsen's voluminous thesis on improvisation? The first and third correct answers each win a pair of tickets to the 9:30pm performance.

SCREENING
The Bernadette Corporation: Get Rid of Yourself (2003)

when: Wed 4.27 (7pm)
where: UCLA Hammer Museum (10899 Wilshire Blvd, 310.443.7000) map
price: $5
links: Event Info

Don't let the pert name fool you — the Bernadette Corporation is part riot grrrl posse, part film collective, part propaganda machine, part publishing house, and all party. The group has organized unpermitted street fairs and ad hoc art carnivals, abused the public access airwaves, and generally given Manhattan's numb and square a good-natured wake-up call since 1994. Get Rid of Yourself was filmed during the riots at the 2001 G8 summit in Genoa, Italy; the Corp takes a nontraditional approach to documentary, eschewing objectivity in favor of celebrating innovation in the anti-globalization protests. Plus, Chloë Sevigny is in it. (SND)

Note: A discussion with group members follows the screening.

Thursday TUE   WED   THUR   FRI   SAT   SUN   MON   ONG   FEAT

PHOTOGRAPHY: Opening
Joel-Peter Witkin: Heart Beats Dust

when: Thur 4.28 (7-9pm)
where: 148 N La Brea Ave (323.934.2250) map
price:
links: Event Info | Joel-Peter Witkin

Let's start with the soft sell: Joel-Peter Witkin is a romantic, a photographer with remarkable craftsmanship who hand-alters his negatives in evocative ways. But all this technical mastery has been eclipsed by the grotesque, hardcore pictures themselves. Dwarves, torture victims, whores, lepers — a litany of the misshapen languish among the shadows of his grottos. His hand and eye are in top form in this exhibition, yet his new work seems softer — either he's been reading poetry, or we've finally become accustomed to his vision. With all the freaks in the real world, at least these ones are beautiful. (SND)

Note: The exhibit runs through Sat 5.18.

FILM
Sneak Preview of Zombie Honeymoon

when: Thur 4.28 (7:30pm)
where: Egyptian Theatre (6712 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, 323.466.FILM) map
price: $9
links: Event Info | Zombie Honeymoon

Into the solid footprints of Shaun of the Dead creeps another entry in the rom-zom-com category. The premise of Zombie Honeymoon is simple enough: boy meets girl, boy marries girl, boy gets bit by a zombie and then tries to eat girl. Shot on a shoestring budget, the film rises above the typical slasher pablum by being as concerned with the emotional development of its characters as it is with their gory demises. Putting the phrase "in sickness and in health" to the test, the film examines the difficulties that come with long-term commitment. With some couples, the struggle is about the husband playing too much Xbox; with this one, he just happens to devour the neighbors. (JCF)

Note: The animated short Dentist (2004) is also showing tonight. There is a discussion following the films with Zombie director Dave Gebroe.

What does "rom-zom-com" mean? The twelfth correct answer wins a pair of tickets to this sneak preview.

ART: Opening
Reel Art: Inside Igor Kovalyov

when: Thur 4.28 (7pm)
where: Lev Moross Gallery (962 N La Brea, W Hollywood, 323.512.0151) map
price:
links: Event Info | Igor Kovalyov

Igor Kovalyov belongs to a storied group of gifted artists who fled Eastern European countries; in his case, a show of his groundbreaking films here in the US landed him a visa. Unafraid of sex, surrealism, or symbolism, Kovalyov has since become an accomplished director and animator, with his new film Milch making a big noise on the festival circuit. He is known for his distinctive, stylized hand, which seems to hum with energy while depicting the heartbreaking and sometimes comical human condition. This exhibition features intimate process drawings and rare sketchbooks, as well as the installation of a site-specific scroll. (SND)

Note: Milch is being screened at the opening. The exhibit runs through Sat 5.28 (Tue-Sat: 10pm-5pm).

Friday TUE   WED   THUR   FRI   SAT   SUN   MON   ONG   FEAT

PERFORMANCE
Panétnica: A Pavilion of X-treme Identities

when: Fri 4.29 (6-10pm)
where: Los Angeles County Museum of Art (5905 Wilshire Blvd, 323.857.6000) map
price: $9
links: Event Info | La Pocha Nostra

To rewrite our stereotypes, writer and performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña has teamed up with La Pocha Nostra cohorts dancer/choreographer Michéle Ceballos and Mexico City performance artist Violeta Luna) to stage several "living dioramas." Clad in striking, iconic costumes, the players in these tableaux vivants challenge the concept of cultural identity in California by burrowing deep into the social, political, and sexual aspects of multiculturalism in the West. Gómez-Peña mixes wry wit with a dark sense of humor to create truly eye-opening and memorable images. (DR)

MUSIC: Electronica
Ulrich Schnauss w/ George Sarah and String Trio

when: Fri 4.29 (8pm)
where: Knitting Factory (7021 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, 323.463.0204) map
price: $12 / $10 advance
links: Event Info | Ulrich Schnauss | George Sarah

First the world gets a German pope, and now we get this Teutonic treat. Ulrich Schnauss might not lord over one billion Catholics, but he certainly makes shoegazing electro-pop that's immensely listenable. On his breakthrough efforts, Far Away Trains Passing By and A Strangely Isolated Place, the young producer crafted exquisite songs bursting with warm melodies, orchestral grandeur, and emotive energy. For an even sweeter deal, LA electronic mainstay George Sarah creates a musical pas de deux by bringing along a string trio to play along with him tonight. (PJ)

What rather cryptic comment did Schnauss make about Dresden in a recent interview? The second correct answer wins a pair of tickets to the show.

DJ
Harvey w/ Lillyanne and DJ Smash

when: Fri 4.29 (9pm-2am)
where: The Conga Room (5364 Wilshire Blvd, 323.938.1696) map
price: $15 / $10 advance
links: Event Info | DJ Harvey

Join a throng of sweaty bodies and nodding heads at the Conga Room tonight, as trainspotters and clubbing cognoscenti alike jock the inimitable Harvey, who digs deep into his crates for his signature mix of unidentifiable funk, glittering disco gems, midtempo prog rock, and hands-in-the-air classics. Harvey is supported by LA darling Lillyanne of HeadinghomeRecordings, while DJ Smash of Blue Note Records keeps things on the up-and-up with a lively mix of downtempo in the Motown Lounge. It's almost like two separate parties — both deserving of their own crowds. (AM)

What is the name of Harvey's own label? The first ten correct answers each win a pair of tickets to the event.

DJ
The Rub feat. DJ Ayres, DJ Eleven, Cosmo Baker, and DJ Pube$

when: Fri. 4.29 (9:30pm-3am)
where: Vida (1930 Hillhurst, 323.660.4445) map
price: $3
links: The Rub | DJ Ayres | DJ Pube$ | Cosmo Baker

Since 2002, the Rub has been one of the best parties in Brooklyn, and you've got no one but these DJs to thank for it. Ayres, Eleven, Cosmo Baker, and a wide assortment of associates mash up a cornucopia of booty-centric records (hip-hop, bass, dancehall, house, post-punk — whatever works) for maximum dance floor impact. The obvious model is Philly's legendary Hollertronix soirées, where the vibe is always musically unsteady, and the jive is always sweaty. In fact, the co-producer of this first-ever West Coast appearance is none other than DJ Pube$, himself an expat from the city of brotherly love. So if you care to shake it, you're sure to get rubbed the right way. (PO)

DJ
Liza Richardson

when: Fri 4.29 (10pm)
where: Zanzibar (1301 5th St, Santa Monica, 310.451.2221) map
price: $10
links: Zanzibar | Liza Richardson

Pinpointing Liza Richardson's favorite musical genre is only slightly easier than sticking a pigeon through the hole of a rare, limited-issue white label 12-inch. The host of KCRW's The Drop, Richardson specializes in all things underground, soulful, and funky. All things — she's as fluent in afrobeat as she is in disco-punk, and her eclectic house sets prove she's nothing if not a free spirit. A DJ for over a decade, she's graced decks all across California, as well as clubs south of the border. As a music supervisor for films and commercials, she's chosen tracks for everything from Y Tu Mamá También to the latest iPod campaign. So listen up as you boogie down — you just might learn something. (JCF)

Though her ecclectic tastes are as Californian as can be, Richardson hails from a city a bit further east. Where was she born? The first five correct answers each win a pair of tickets to the show.

Saturday TUE   WED   THUR   FRI   SAT   SUN   MON   ONG   FEAT

FILM
Once Were Warriors (1994) w/ Rena Owen

when: Sat 4.30 (4pm)
where: Directors Guild of America Theater (7920 W Sunset Blvd, W Hollywood, 310.289.2000) map
price:
links: Event Info

Though Lee Tamahori's 1994 drama Once Were Warriors is set in the gritty underbelly of urban Auckland, New Zealand, the story of abuse and redemption could easily be found in Anytown, USA. Harrowing and gripping, the film pits a Maori clan's modern-day demons against the rediscovery of its roots. Warriors picked up numerous film awards and earned its star, Rena Owen, multiple international Best Actress nods — her gut-wrenching performance as the indomitable matriarch is just one reason this flick still packs a powerful punch. Soon to be seen in George Lucas' latest installment of Star Wars, Owen appears in the flesh this afternoon for a post-screening discussion. (JH)

LAUNCH
Under Fire.2

when: Sat 4.30 (4-6pm)
where: Gagosian Gallery (456 N Camden Dr, Beverly Hills, 310.271.9400) map
price:
links: Under Fire.2

This two-volume tome from Jordan Crandall is not your average summer beach read. But for those craving a thoughtful debate on the media's representations of war, communication, and weaponry, this is your book. Featuring essays by many of today's leading artists, scientists, critics, activists, and journalists, Under Fire assembles a wide range of perspectives on urban militarization, depictions of violence, corporate misbehavior, and the breakdown of society. It could be the end of the world as you know it. (SND)

PERFORMANCE
The Velvet Hammer Burlesque

when: Sat 4.30 (7pm)
where: El Rey (5515 Wilshire Blvd, 323.936.6400) map
price: $27.50
links: Event Info | The Velvet Hammer Burlesque

Velvet Hammer Burlesque dishes out more sequins, stripping, and singing with its latest extravaganza, Star Spangled Suitcase Pimp. The delightful ensemble of players includes Mr. Uncertain and Lord Millionaire, Miss B. Haven and Venus DeMille, plus special guest Rebekah Del Rio — the sexy Spanish-language chanteuse who lent her voice to David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. These raunchy ladies have no problem spreading the laughs (or their legs) in the most sidesplitting and stimulating show in town. (KH)

Sunday TUE   WED   THUR   FRI   SAT   SUN   MON   ONG   FEAT

FILM
Fritz the Cat (1972) and Wizards (1977) w/ Ralph Bakshi

when: Sun 5.1 (5pm)
where: Aero Theatre (1328 Montana Ave, Santa Monica, 310.395.4990) map
price: $9
links: Event Info | Fritz the Cat | Wizards

From Spongebob to The Brak Show, Ralph Bakshi's ink-stained fingerprints are all over the current crop of zany 'toons. A legendary animator and mentor to Ren & Stimpy's John Kricfalusi, Bakshi finally gets a retrospective at the Aero and the Egyptian this week. At tonight's double-header, ardent fanboys and curious newbies can indulge themselves with a pair of '70s classics, as the Aero screens Bakshi's X-rated adaptation of R. Crumb's Fritz the Cat alongside the rarely-screened cult hit Wizards. For an added draw, the great man himself appears tonight following the films. (TW)

Note: There are two more Bakshi double features this week: the Egyptian screens Fritz the Cat with Heavy Traffic at 7:30pm on Fri 4.29, and Wizards with Coonskin at 7pm on Sat 4.30.

All right, it's time to geek out: what would your wizard name be? Our favorite answer wins a pair of tickets to this screening.

MULTIMEDIA
co-lab:ORATION

when: Sun 5.1 (8pm)
where: Temple Bar (1026 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, 310.393.6611) map
price: $5
links: Event Info

Without a doubt, co-lab:ORATION is the hippest old-school poetry night in town, consistently presenting the very best in spoken word, improv jams, and even live painting. At heart, it's a spoken word open-mic, with a single rule: you can't go up on stage alone. Though the show, hosted by Rachel Kann, starts out slow and thoughtful — but not boring — by its peak around 11pm, the place is packed with positivity. Local lyrical stars rile up their enthusiastic followings, and an eclectic range of voices, from sexy to righteously indignant to confessional, lights up the stage. (SND)

Note: co-lab:ORATION takes place the first Sunday of every month. Sign-up starts at 7:45pm each night before the show. You can check out previous nights in a webcast here.

FUNDRAISER
Dax Benefit Show feat. Subtle, Busdriver, Daedelus, Damon Aaron, and One AM Radio

when: Mon 5.2 (7:30pm)
where: Knitting Factory (7021 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, 323.463.0204) map
price: $12 / $10 advance
links: Event Info | Dax Pierson

A member of spacey hip-hop sextet Subtle, Dax Pierson suffered a broken neck and subsequent paralysis when their tour van hit a patch of black ice this past December. His accident has brought forth waves of support from friends and fans, but his recovery has been a slow and expensive one — two grand from his health insurrance doesn't come close to covering his $30,000 wheelchair. Anticon and Plug Research Records, as well as a myriad of "friends of Dax" have arranged a series of hip-hop and electronica benefit shows from coast to coast to help facilitate a speedy recovery. Tonight's installment features some top-shelf names in LA's avant-everything scenes, including mastermind MC Busdriver and pastiche-y producer Daedelus. (JCF)

ART
Chris Natrop: 11-1/2

when: Now through Sat 4.30 (Fri: 12-6pm / Sat: 12-8pm)
where: Overtones (11306 Venice Blvd, 310.915.0346) map
price:
links: Event Info | Chris Natrop

Remember how much fun it was to make cut-out snowflakes at the kitchen table? Now imagine those snowflakes all grown up into single-sheet creations several feet square. Chris Natrop's latest show is full of lyrical landscapes, resplendent with finely detailed passages and dense sweeps of positive and negative space. These sheets are suspended in front of warmly painted walls, and lit from various angles to reveal an entire parallel world in their projected shadows. A delight, pure and simple. (SND)

THEATRE
Killing Russell Crowe

when: Now through Sun 5.15 (Sat: 2pm / Sun: 7pm)
where: Lonny Chapman Group Repertory Theatre (10900 Burbank Blvd, N Hollywood, 866.811.4111) map
price: $16
links: Event Info

Feeding into every almost-intellectual drunk's fantasy, Jeremy Kehoe's play Killing Russell Crowe concerns a revolution that starts and ends in a bar. Bob Lyman is a man who's had enough of his nothing life. His three-whiskey lunch hour devolves into hallucination: he can lead the poor in a revolution if he, George Orwell, and Charles Bukowski can convince the bartender that it's absolutely necessary. It's drunk talk fermented into high art, with a title that reminds us that a pre-9/11 al-Qaeda made the news by threatening the life of our most precious import, Russell Crowe. (PN)

CONFERENCE
Architectural Digest presents Architecture Days

when: Wed 4.27 - Tue 5.3 (schedule)
where: Various locations
price: Tours: $25-80 / Lectures: $12-20 / Special Events: Free
links: Event Info

To a true architecture enthusiast, Architectural Digest usually sounds about as interesting as a Flock of Seagulls reunion does to an '80s music snob. However, between Wednesday, April 27 and Tuesday, May 3, the upmarket rag is offering an outstanding series of tours, talks, and special events around LA. The tours include new monuments built by last season's fashionable names — Morphosis' Caltrans Building, Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall, Rafael Moneo's new Cathedral — as well as the freshest buildings built by young up-and-comers such as Escher GuneWardena. Avoid the godfather of the Getty, but don't miss out on "Architects of the Set," an arch-meets-film lecture on the 27th. (AL)

DANCE
Emio Greco's Rimasto Orfano

when: Fri 4.29 & Sat 4.30 (8pm)
where: UCLA Live's Royce Hall (Westwood Plaza at Charles E Young Dr S, 310.825.2101)
price: $20-42
links: Event Info | Emio Greco

In Rimasto Orfano (Abandoned Orphan), Italian choreographer Emio Greco and Dutch Theatre director Pieter C. Scholten search for a new dramaturgy of the body, as the dance constantly shifts from classicism to a raw and tribal choreographic landscape. Greco's movement vocabulary is intensely eccentric, but at times it achieves a grotesque serenity, communicating the body's inherent wisdom, pain, and confusion through physical gesture. The dancers seem at a crossroads, abandoned by a previous understanding and forced to confront, dissect, and question each physical moment and each unknown step in their struggle to experience and communicate the reality between body and mind. (ASM)

The Emio Greco Company counts dancers from how many different countries among its members? The first three correct answers each win a pair of tickets to a performance of this show.

FESTIVAL
Coachella

when: Sat 4.30 & Sun 5.1
where: Empire Polo Field (81-800 Avenue 51, Indio) map
price: One day: $80 / Both days: $150
links: Event Info

This year's Coachella boasts such a staggering lineup that it could probably pack its tents at any time in the past 20 years: you have '80s icons Bauhaus, New Order, and Gang of Four; '90s superstars Coldplay, NiN, Weezer, and the Chemical Brothers; and current standard-bearers Wilco, Bright Eyes, Doves, Bloc Party, the Faint, the Arcade Fire, and the Futureheads — to name just a very few. There's also enough DJ action and block-rocking beats to keep the cacti on their toes, with Swayzak, Diplo, DJ Krush, Ben Watt, M.I.A., Matthew Dear, Matmos, Aesop Rock, and Miss Kittin. Damn, we swore wouldn't resort to lists, but what more can we say? Even the weather forecast looks good. (TW)

Flavorpill, Audi, and URB are hooking one winner and nine friends up with tickets to an exclusive Coachella Afterparty. Tell us which Coachella 2005 artist you're most excited to see and why — the response we like the best is Indio-bound.

Features TUE   WED   THUR   FRI   SAT   SUN   MON   ONG   FEAT

  CATCH IT: Viralnet

Viralnet is not a blog, nor is it a message board or magazine; it's more like an online journal of projects, art, and writings, created by a community of thinkers and artists bound by common ideas. Committed to being a politically, socially, and culturally progressive nexus, it draws contributors from everywhere from LA and NYC to Bogota and CalArts (where many are teachers or students). It's a bit like one of those old Parisian salons, but with slick flash interfaces in place of overstuffed chaise lounges. The site's design is arresting, the content intelligent and witty, and the artwork absolutely of our time. (SND)

CD REVIEW: Jaga Jazzist, What We Must

Ninja Tune
Released April 19, 2005
$15.98 (Amazon)

Jaga Jazzist are one of those interesting transcultural anomalies: the ten-strong Norwegian collective enjoys large-scale success at home, but remains a whispered-about underground pleasure abroad. This sprawling epic of a disc retains their electro-jazz elements, but also incorporates shoegazing rock, orchestral pop, and ambient atmospherics. Lead track "All I Know Is Tonight," for example, sweeps in on a bed of spectral guitars like a lost M83 gem; the beginning of "Oslo Skyline," meanwhile, echoes the more spritely sounds of fellow countryman Sondre Lerche's compositions before soaring back into sci-fi soundtrack terrain. At only seven songs, this adds up to one impressively huge musical vision. (DL)

  STREAMS: Dirty

Always quick on the draw for new music, the folks at Dirty have stepped up their considerable game. The site now features an in-depth interview with ones-to-watch Hot Chip, as well as the Emperor Machine, a sci-fi disco product from Chicken Lips' Andy Meecham. On the mix front, Death in Vegas' Richard Fearless, whose new Satan's Circus drops May 24th, lays down a stellar dub set that'll leave the headz satisfied. DJ/rupture mixes his twitchy blend of beats, breaks, and machine funk on three decks, while the Optimo DJs present one of their splendidly eclectic sets from Sub Club in Glasgow. (CJN)
