Analogue Press presents Eames Demetrios
Eames Demetrios is the grandson of the famed furniture designer, but his own vision has expanded beyond his lineage. Accomplished in his own right as a writer, a designer, and a filmmaker, Demetrios is one of six artists featured in the second volume of the Analogue Press Portfolio Series Altered State. Tonight, he performs at the studio in conjunction with the new print portfolio's release. Like his grandpappy, he's all about the complicated relationship between people and the objects with which they furnish their lives — just not so much about the chairs. (SND)

Midnight Movies w/ On the Speakers and Bedroom Walls
As their name suggests, LA's own Midnight Movies have a darker theatrical bent. Lead singer Gena Olivier channels a palpable no-wave spirit, providing sensuous, eerie vocals for the band's sumptuous riffs — it's easy to see how they've earned the respect of Hollywood's music ghouls time and time again. Having found each other in 2002 through musician want ads, each member pulls from a plethora of influences (from Nico to Nirvana), which they combine into a supernatural, mind-bending sound as scary as it is soothing. With On the Speakers' pop-rock and Bedroom Walls' self-called romanticore warming up the stage, it's a night to please everyone's ears. (KH)
What was Velvet Underground chanteuse Nico's birth name? The second and fifth correct answers each win a pair of tickets to this event.

Adam Zagajewski
One of the most renowned contemporary Polish poets, Adam Zagajewski has been pouring his blend of historical, metaphysical, and visceral imagery into his poetry, essays, and fiction since the 1960s. With an introspective style riddled with witty, sardonic details and tender insights, Zagajewski illuminates everything from the political atmosphere of Communist Poland to his personal life and his love of literature — all through quirky, intimate observations. Tonight, hear each complex, beautiful poem spoken aloud by this prolific master. (KH)

Low w/ Pedro the Lion
Tonight's show presents powerful indie rock from two faithful followers of different flocks. David Bazan, aka Pedro the Lion, is a practicing Christian, but also one of the faith's staunchest critics. Like that of Johnny Cash or Robert Johnson, the joy of his songwriting lies in his struggle between the sacred and the profane. Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low, meanwhile, are married and Mormon — and if you add an "s" to the front of the band's name and "core" to the end, you get the musical genre they are the poster children for. However, with their latest album The Great Destroyer, Low have cranked up the tempo to turn out some great, high-energy, Guided by Voices-like jams. Regardless of your faith, both these bands will lift you up. (JCF)
Which track title on Low's newest album is also an Arthur Miller play? The third and fifth correct responses each win a pair of tickets to this event.

Kevin Saunderson
Even though Detroit techno founder Kevin Saunderson has gained worldwide respect, he still has a presence in the scene he created. His trademark soul-tech productions with sexy house vocals are perpetually influential; he helps curate Fuse-In (Detroit's annual electronic music festival), runs his own record label, and tours extensively. This is his only US performance outside of Motor City, and the intimate Concord is an ideal venue to experience the godfather's blip-funk style. Erik Lohr and SK Grin heat things up to start off the night. (LK)
Before quitting to pursue a musical direction, Kevin Saunderson played football for which university? The first, third, and fifth correct responses each win a pair of tickets to this event.

Four below-the-radar artists come out of the woodwork this evening to display their latest original works at Equator Books. With three distinct styles, each exhibits a take on pop culture, consumerism, sexuality, and image. The most straightforward is Give (aka Albert Reyes), whose images of corporate America and Hollywood make frank observations on modern society. Matthew Weidmann takes a more colorful approach, all the while maintaining modesty with his outsider approach. Neil Wax debuts his mysterious "Abject Goods," and John Evans rounds out the foursome with crayon-like drawings depicting curiously innocent carnal imagery. Join the festivities on this April Fool's Day and experience firsthand three convincing arguments for the rebirth of the LA underground art scene. (MG)

Delicatessen (1991) and Lift (2003)
Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 1991 art-house classic Delicatessen somehow crossed over and struck filmgoers' nerves. It helped that laughing or cringing was left entirely up to the viewer, since this adult fairy tale features a butcher feeding his starving customers by iniquitously omnivorous means. Despite its grisly storyline, however, the treatment is both silly and humane, never becoming too grotesque or moralistic. Caro and Jeunet also seduce viewers with a precise yet sweeping post-apocalyptic world as uncanny and absurd as a haunted house. The feel is similar to Terry Gilliam's Brazil — one of its obvious precedents — but with the dread realism quotient turned way down. (PO)
Note: Lift — a 30-minute film by Hugues Dalton and Jeff Garton — also plays tonight. The star of both flicks, Dominique Pinon, appears with Dalton and Garton for a Q&A following the screening.

Still trying to adjust to a world of terror alerts and insecurity? Try mainlining the cinematic paranoia of the 1970s. Tonight's double screening features Philip Kaufman's 1978 update of the classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers, which leaves the Red scare overtones of the original flick intact, while in Assault on Precinct 13, John Carpenter channels the white panic of old Westerns into a tale of a siege on a Bronx police station, with the rampaging Indians replaced by an endless stream of gang members. Is it any coincidence that remakes of both films are currently in production? (TW)
Note: In another double feature, Blow Out (1981) and Cutter's Way (1981) play on Sat 4.2 at 7:30pm.

Motörhead w/ Corrosion of Conformity, Zeke, and Fozzy
Motörhead are not about intellectual math rock or subtle concepts. They're just simply one of the loudest, fastest, and hardest working rock bands of all time. Led by speed metal icon and rocker's rocker Lemmy Kilmister, these guys are well outside the spotlight of MTV or mainstream radio: yet they have a mass appeal that seems to transcend critical discussion or economic background. Someone once called them the very greatest bar band. Hardcore thrash band Corrosion of Conformity, as well as Zeke and Fozzy, open this vociferous assault on the senses, as they all take over the Wiltern Theater tonight. (TCR)

At first glance, Christina Ray's elusive images seem to belong to an earlier aesthetic in photography — one that combined the novelty of technology with a fondness for impressionism's lyrical abstraction. But her body of work is also inspired by the muse of modern travel, through which anyone can find themselves in scores of unfamiliar cities in their lifetime. With the senses on heightened alert during a journey, memories are formed at rapid-fire pace and everything from mailboxes to passersby to architecture acquires dramatic stature by virtue of being part of the adventure. These photographs act as both visual and emotional doubles, returning the camera to its original function in documenting our experience of the world. (SND)

The Soundtrack of Our Lives w/ the Dears
Godfathers of the prolific Swedish rock scene, the Soundtrack of Our Lives waste nothing on their long-awaited new album, Origin Vol. 1. Unlike their three previous sprawling psych-pop epics, their latest is more compact, and stuffed with tasty Who-influenced riffs and Procol Harum-flavored organ jams. The album's title suggests that a similarly short companion piece will soon follow (in contrast to the four-year wait between the last two albums). But longtime fans needn't worry, as brevity and restraint are foreign concepts at their live shows, where ecstatic freak-outs are served up Swedish-style all night long. Acclaimed Canadian darlings the Dears open the show. (EJL)

Mastodon w/ Burning Brides and the Hidden Hand

If you're looking to get "heavy" this Saturday night, you won't find a better bill than the trio of bands gracing the Troubadour's stage. Atlanta-based Mastodon is the moment's "it" metal band; their late-2004 album Leviathan (Relapse) is an undeniable beast — always grinding and thrashing when it's supposed to — despite its seemingly Spinal Tap-ish premise (a metal reworking of Melville's Moby Dick). Fresh off their recent Spaceland residency, Philly garage-rock trashers Burning Brides make people jump up and down with a power chord crunch 'n boogie. Finally, former St. Vitus vocalist Scott Weinrich's the Hidden Hand are among stoner metal's finest conspiracy theory projects. (PO)

Spaceland's stage has become a platform for indie's dandies and darlings. Rick Prelinger's Panorama Ephemera
For years, Rick Prelinger has passionately collected and archived an overwhelming number of ephemeral films, books, and documents. His extraordinary collection was recently acquired by the Library of Congress, and deservedly so. In Panorama Ephemera, he pulls from this wide range of industrial, educational, advertising, and amateur films, weaving together a surreal collage of dozens of sequences from 20th century America. It begins with a black and white clip of a recently hypnotized couple who can't remember their prearranged signal to come out of the trance. Their doctor then suggests they try a few things to identify the signal. This launches into a unique, humorous, profound, and at times disturbing patchwork portrait of Americana. (SN)

In a time of sloganeering t-shirt irony, Mardo play straight-ahead rock 'n roll — the classic kind that calls for big hair, pleather pants, and stage swagger. You'll hear loud — really loud — echoes of the band's musical influences, which range from Cream to Led Zeppelin. But the Mardo brothers (Aron on lead vocals and Robbie on drums) and guitarist Rob Small bring on the hook-heavy, glam-dusted power rock without wallowing in the past. Instead, they polish those classic-rock roots into something shinier and more melodic, though certainly nothing approaching the emo-rock that's all the rage. Be sure to leave your cardigan at home. Once you get that "caprine" refers to goats, the light clicks on. Not only a gifted figurative painter, New York-based artist Charlotta Westergren has a sense of humor. In this series, she's recreated the style and feeling of 17th-century European court painting, except her lustre comes not from linseed oil or varnish, but from the use of shiny, yummy car enamel. And although her subjects could be considered royalty, that would be only in the rarefied world of high-end goat breeding. Move over, Charles and Camilla, there's a new nobility gracing the walls of the nation's galleries. (SND)

Bill T. Jones' dances are always superbly crafted, yet they remain subordinate to an emotionally compassionate theatrical experience. Jones' choreography confronts raw social issues by presenting the body's language in times of crisis and moments of discovery to expose the complexities, contradictions, pain, and joy within the human soul. This 20th Anniversary concert includes "The Phantom Project: Still/Here Looking On" — a re-examination Jones' landmark work "Still/Here," which explores mortality through the eyes of men and women living with life-threatening illnesses. Another piece, "Mercy, 10 x 8 on a Circle," takes its inspiration from Flannery O'Connor's disturbing short story "The Artificial Nigger," raising questions of race, power, and human relationships. Lit against the barren, almost extraterrestrial terrain of Kazakhstan, director Guka Omarova's debut feature sounds the particular, muted cry of adolescents everywhere straining under the roofs of malevolent caretakers. Slack-jawed teenager "Schizo" snags poor countrymen to box in illegal fights at the prompting of his bad-seed stepdad until one of his recruits dies in the ring. When delivering the news to the fighter's widow and son, he falls for their tart-faced charm, and launches a plan to form a family of his own with them. Spare, almost sullen at times, and certainly slow, Schizo somehow transcends the category of crime drama to qualify as one of the most compelling cinematic imports yet this year. (LR)

CD REVIEW: Out Hud, Let Us Never Speak of It Again |
Kranky
Released March 2005
$14.99 (Insound)
Culling membership from disco-punks !!!, the Brooklyn-via-Sacramento collective Out Hud enter 2005 with a more refined game. Where the mechanized, funkified beauty of their prior full-length, S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D., was occasionally marred by gratuitous spasms of dissonance, Nic Offer and Co. find the hooks on Let Us Never Speak of It Again and ride 'em smoothly over beefy house rhythms, Moroder-esque synths, and vigorous bass slaps en route to the warehouse party that time — and the electroclash kids — left for dead in '03. On "Old Nude" and "The Stoked American" — mid-tempo tracks featuring Molly Schnick's and Phyllis Forbes' breathy, coquettish vocals — Out Hud echo their post-punk forbears ESG, which is no bad thing. Vaguely political song titles seem inconsequential; opus "Dear Mr. Bush..." augments 11 minutes of hi-hat riding disco fever with a mournful cello refrain and nary a word uttered. Now how punk is that? (JAS)
