From the Editor

Put on your sensible shoes, Angelenos, because all kinds of outdoor events are demanding your participation in that most un-LA of activities: walking. The annual Venice Art Walk lets you tiptoe behind the beach town's bohemian curtain, while LACMA urges you to walk a, well, mile for this month's Miracle Mile gallery night. Barefoot types, meanwhile, can roam even farther afield at the Joshua Tree Music Festival. Or, skip the left-foot-right-foot business and move your feet by dancing at the Cuban Music Festival or the first Do-Over of the summer party season. Either way, it's time break the mold and pound the pavement — you never know what your feet might discover.

Politics and the Internet share an uneasy alliance. But the "character" issues and PR minutiae that dominate this year's US election coverage inspired Aaron Swartz to forge a new kind of connection between the message and the medium. It's called Watchdog.net, and our sister publication Activate got the lowdown on exactly what it's trying to accomplish.

A tremendously talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Joe Jackson is too often overshadowed in the pop pantheon by his more angular countryman Elvis Costello — or (worse) remembered only for his debut single, "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" Having at various points in his prolific recording career traversed genres from swing (a full 15 years before Brian Setzer jumped, jived, and wailed) and salsa to R&B and reggae, Jackson is an eclectic stylist whose compositions never sound confused or overreaching. On the road in support of his latest studio effort, Rain, he's reunited with his new-wave bandmates Graham Maby and Dave Houghton, and is looking sharp as ever.

Minnesota-based art rockers Cloud Cult have principles. Since musician and environmentalist Craig Minowa founded the band in 1995, the Cult have scorned lucrative record deals in favor of their own not-for-profit label, released albums made entirely from recycled materials, and even planted thousands of trees to offset their carbon footprint. But Dave Matthews Band they're not: the group's propensity for baroque balladry, sweeping strings, and rich choral arrangements is more in line with Arcade Fire's pathos-drenched anthems or the Polyphonic Spree's many-membered chamber pop. Tonight, the septet — with eco-friendly pamphlets, video backdrop, and live painters in tow — performs tracks from its sixth LP, Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying through Tornados).

Copenhagen's Efterklang often swell to ten players to better wow audiences with their earthshaking live shows. As with Sigur Rós and Rachel's, this orchestral- pop group is clearly indebted to neo-classical composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass. But it sets itself apart with a heavy reliance on the human voice, whether in the form of a swelling chorus or the haunted lament of a single singer. Openers and fellow Danes Slaraffenland offer a mix of wiry guitars, cool electronics, and soulful vocals more reminiscent of TV on the Radio.

Branded as the print world's Pinocchio after his addiction memoir A Million Little Pieces became a scapegoat for the industry, author James Frey survived a literary witch-burning and a swift drop from his publisher. Fortunately, the scribe rose from the ashes to pen a new "novel" (read: fiction) called Bright Shiny Morning. Tonight, Frey reads from his homage to LA (a city known for its forgiveness) along with friend and guest speaker Josh Kilmer-Purcell. If you haven't read I Am Not Myself These Days, Purcell's hilarious booze-and-pills recounting of his '90s Manhattan drag-queen/copywriter days, pick up a copy at the reading, along with his latest, Candy Everybody Wants. Metal rockers Black Tide make some noise afterward.

The Little Ones play the kind of pop music you wish LA would always produce: no rock posturing or fake tales of hard knocks — just "California Dreamin'" for the new millennium. With hearty nods to '60s pop (think Beach Boys and the Zombies), the quintet's momentum has steadily grown since 2006's Sing Song EP. A full-length is due this summer — perfect timing for garrulous, clap-along pop tunes. Openers Ra Ra Riot might still be reeling from the tragic death of their drummer, but they manage to joyfully rock through live shows. Electric cello and violin add depth to lead singer Wesley Miles' earnest wails and guitarist Milo Bonacci's raucous strumming.

Of rock 'n roll's many princes of darkness, American Music Club singer Mark Eitzel has the market cornered on barroom laments. Family, love, and politics are all fair game in Eitzel's somber verses, as his band's eclectic folk-rock arrangements shore up his bleaker visions. AMC first emerged in San Francisco in the mid-'80s with albums like The Restless Stranger and California, and though they never shot for mainstream success, they developed a dedicated following on the strength of their old-fashioned integrity. Eitzel and Co. returned from a ten-year hiatus with 2004's Love Songs for Patriots, and tonight, AMC hit up the Echo alongside Violent Femmes singer Gordon Gano.

American Russian Theatre Ensemble Laboratory produces interdisciplinary events that illuminate Russia's darkly poetic, politically charged history. Now, ARTEL focuses on the legacy of Mikhail Bulgakov (1891-1940), who's best known for the exquisite satirical fantasy The Master and Margarita. ARTEL's latest production tells the story of Bulgakov's life with a litany of innovative, interactive performance devices that expand audiences' understanding of one of the most troubling, inspirational, and least-understood periods in modern literature — unearthing the lessons it holds for navigating today's world.

The newest exhibition to hit Shepard and Amanda Fairey's Subliminal Projects gallery features the work of LA-based artists Deedee Cheriel and Louise Bonnet. Cheriel's background in the Oregon punk-rock scene mingles with her love of folk art and nature; her images often feature saucy scenes of intertwining limbs engaging in sex acts, but with the heads of, say, a growling bear or sparrow popped on top. Artist/illustrator Bonnet also channels a love of punk iconography into her colorful, kaleidoscopic visions. Once a graphic designer for a successful cosmetics company, Bonnet now creates seas of blank-faced people drawn at curiously geometric angles.

Swedish singer Robyn may be familiar to late-'90s pop fans for her Max Martin-glossed hit "Show Me Love" — rumored, incidentally, to have been passed on by Britney Spears in favor of "...Baby One More Time." Robyn's more recent ascendancy began with the Internet circulation of her silly/aggressive talk rap "Konichiwa Bitches" and wistful, club-ready "With Every Heartbeat." However, the magical pop goodness of her 2005 self-titled album, which racked up the Swedish equivalent of three Grammys, is only now making its way stateside.

The Do-Over returns for another caliente season of beats, BBQ, and signature sangria courtesy of Stones Throw Records and Crane's Hollywood Tavern. Hosted by Haycock, Strong, and the inimitably sunny Aloe Blacc, the Do-Over kicks off summer just a bit early with a slate of unannounced special guests — per Do-Over policy, the lineup is kept secret until game time. If previous years' all-star shows are any indication, it'll be a get-down to remember. Monday's a write-off anyway, so don't be afraid to stay late.

The Noisy People break all the rules of conventional music-playing: they blow on the wrong ends of their horns; they hit percussion instruments with vegetables; they soup up their violins and brass instruments, creating wild hybrids of traditional orchestral sounds. Tim Perkis is a member of the San Francisco-based improvisational music group, and his documentary Noisy People follows the avant-garde troupe for one year. Tonight, the film is co-presented by LA Filmforum and Cinefamily at the gorgeously remodeled Silent Movie Theatre. After the screening, several of the film's subjects perform live and host a Q&A session.

El Perro del Mar's From the Valley to the Stars builds on the band's haunting doo-wop vibe with organs, pianos, and glittery orchestrations (the latter courtesy of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra). Mastermind Sarah Assbring conceived the atmospheric follow-up to her critically acclaimed, self-titled debut as a thematic record, traversing the lowest and highest of emotional heights. Avoiding faux depth for something more surreal, Assbring cloaks old-fashioned folk in pained croons and heavy echoes — the perfect reflections of her dark Scandinavian sensibilities. El Perro del Mar bring their partly cloudy stage presence to town tonight alongside buzz-worthy avant-pop princess Lykke Li.

As if universal healthcare isn't enough, Vancouver's Dan Bejar strengthens the case for our red, white, and maple neighbors to the north. Under the Destroyer moniker, his distinctive blend of Cat Stevens-cum-Renaissance Fair theatrics and histrionic guitar work gives shape to a strikingly consistent, if highly idiosyncratic body of work. As part of power-pop factory the New Pornographers, Bejar typifies the collectivist spirit of recent Canadian indie rock. LA's own Devon Williams opens with a set of similarly skewed ensemble-pop gems.

It isn't often that eight different writers put their heads together to craft a single play, but that's the case in Anatomy of a Slap — a group workshop piece by Off-Chance Productions at Silverlake's Son of Semele Theater. In Anatomy's meta play-within-a-play, a young woman named Renee writes an autobiographical theatre piece and encounters an unexpected twist on opening night. Throughout it all, the play explores the thin separation between reality and perception, as seen in the stark symbolism of a slap in the face.
