SPECIAL FEATURE
Flavorwire Q&A: The Betrayal
|
|
|
In her directorial debut, The Betrayal (Nerakhoon), cinematographer Ellen Kuras takes on long-hushed spirits with a documentary about the indomitable Phrasavaths — a large Laotian family forced to flee their home and resettle in Brooklyn. Shot over 23 years, and recently short-listed for an Oscar nomination, the film features a close collaboration with the family's eldest son, Thavi.

Bradford Cox, the lanky frontman and curious creative force behind Deerhunter, has done it again. Upping the ante on their own 2007 achievement Cryptograms, Cox and Co. drop Microcastle, which includes a second bonus disc, Weird Era Cont.! Though Cox's fascination for '50s and '60s pop is present and palpable, the Joey Ramone-y freak show seems to take a back seat on this rather psychedelic musical journey through reverb-heavy, post-punk, droney acid-dripping rock 'n roll. Guitarist Lockett Pundt takes lead vocal responsibilities on "Agoraphobia," and bassist Josh Fauver wrote most of standout "Nothing Ever Happened." Nonetheless, the Atlanta psych-rock quintet takes giant strides with the band's newest sunlit noise-rock masterpiece.

Brooklyn's the Hold Steady have come a long way from their roots in legendary Minneapolis indie-rock outfit LFTR PLLR. The self-declared bar band is still riding high on Stay Positive, yet another critically acclaimed release rife with classic-rock riffs and tales of the young and reckless. While he doesn't so much sing as speak, frontman Craig Finn manages to masterfully catalog the thrills of life after early innocence is lost. The backing band, meanwhile, is less interested in breaking the mold than capturing the spirit of old-school rock 'n roll. Tonight they co-headline alongside rocker monsters Drive-By Truckers. Expect full sets from both bands.

Never one to shy away from controversy, Nas wanted to name his newest record after the world's most famous racial epithet. But, due to distribution difficulties from retailers, the hip-hop icon was forced to settle on Untitled. As he warns in his hit release, "Hero," "If Nas can't say it, think about these talented kids / With new ideas being told what they can and can't spit." While he's certainly right to raise the point, Nas can take solace in the fact that "Hero" became a Billboard hit in June, and the album has since been certified Gold. He may have lost a word, but at least he's still got his grip.

The tenth-annual Thanks Givends benefit concert packs a warehouse with 20+ DJs and a range of art rooms. The roster is overflowing with surprise MCs, drummers, spinmeisters, and vocalists culled from the ranks of Kajmere Sound, Stones Throw, Ubiquity, Afro Funke', Transit Events, Art Don't Sleep, Beat Junkies, and a host of other local, progressive crews. In honor of the late, great DJ Dusk, half of proceeds benefit the Mar Vista Family Center, a west-side youth center promoting education and community leadership. This year, half the proceeds also go to Ma Dukes (J Dilla's moms) to aid in her own battle against Lupus, the illness that took her son's life.

What began as a random act of kindness has since become one of Los Angeles' fastest-growing grassroots institutions, Gobble Gobble Give. The annual Echo Park effort marks its tenth anniversary this year, but with 80,000 people living on the streets of LA, there can never be too many volunteers. Bighearted people are still being recruited to help out: participants donate food — homemade or store-bought — and gather at the Echo to assemble meals for those in need. Volunteer drivers then set out to disperse the meals across the city. If you can't lend a hand, there are still ways to help: all donations, including clothes, are accepted.

Thanksgiving is all about spending time with the lovable-but-crazy family. Oh, and overeating, of course. But if you're in the mood for starting a new tradition, head over to S&S to chill with all the other lonely people for Misfit Thanksgiving. Dance the night away with DJ Lee, who spins funk, soul, rock 'n roll, rare indie grooves, and other surprises that keep the party going this and every Thursday. There may not be any turkey, dressing, or ham, but you can still fill up on some lively drink specials with a Thanksgiving theme.

The relentless coverage of Esa-Pekka Salonen and the LA Philharmonic's long kiss goodnight is an emotional affair for the city's classical music scene. Salonen's appointment as Music Director in 1992 ushered in an era of growth for the orchestra, a mission dramatically realized with the creation of Disney Hall, a temple to all things majestic and beautiful. Now, the venerable institution prepares to welcome boy king Gustavo Dudamel, a charismatic, photogenic prodigy set to enchant critics and lure young audiences (that means you) to the ball. Over the course of several performances, he conducts Ligeti, Strauss, Mozart, and Beethoven.

Evoking the spirit of Peggy Lee's "Fever," Holly Golightly's honeyed voice courts quiet cacophony, rubbing everything from washboards strummed by metal-tipped fingers to sharp finger snaps. Since leaving neo-garage rockers Thee Headcoatees, Golightly has honed the relatively singular style, each new solo record both improving and building on the last. While she's perhaps best known her covers of Ike Turner and Bill Withers (not to mention her collaboration on the White Stripes' Elephant), Golightly's songs are now ready for a spotlight all their own.

Droid Behavior's latest installment of their acclaimed Interface series features two heavies straight out of Detroit, DJ Rolando and DJ Bone. Rolando returns to LA for the first time in ten years to drop one of his signature eclectic sets of funky house, ripping electro, and deep Detroit techno. Bone's masterful use of blends, scratches, and backspins combine with his unrivaled use of the faders to make for a seriously inspiring set. Drumcell, Acid Circus, Developer, and Andrew Kelly vs Alex Villalobos round out the bill.

Given its terminally earnest nature and willingness to establish rules of conduct, goth was destined to eventually lapse into self-parody. Sisters of Mercy were as guilty as any party — the epic choral intro on "This Corrosion" (still their most enduring moment) is the definition of over-the-top. But there was always something brave about mastermind Andrew Eldritch's embrace of Big Dumb Rock. Rigid, mega-produced dance dirges like "Temple of Love" had no time for irony — they were too busy embracing metal's ridiculousness and classic rock's bluster. Fellow Leeds post-punkers Gang of Four and Delta 5 get endless props for their self-aware conceptualism. But, by stubbornly resisting that knowing wink, Sisters of Mercy deserve those kudos just the same.

Margaret Jenkins has brought her wildly successful Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange (CHIME) project down to Southern California after five years of nurturing and elevating the scene with promising young San Francisco choreographers. Local recipients Rae Shao-Lan Blum, Bradley Michaud, and Olivier Tarpaga — artists whose works have been solidly gracing LA boards for a few years now — have benefited from the guidance of Simone Forti, Rosanna Gamson, and David Roussève over the past year. The results are laid bare tonight at CHIME LIVE!, an evening devoted to revealing the nature of the collaborations as well as their artistic output.

Venice's transformation from the sister nabe of Loisaida into Williamsburg West continues with the re-opening of Venice Beach Wines on the increasingly de-sketchified Rose Ave (aka the "next Abbot Kinney"). Once a hand-curated wine boutique, the spot has recently reinvented itself as a half bottle shop, half wine bar, introducing table service and a simple-but-elegant menu of fancy cheese and small plates. There's a corkage fee for opening your new libations on premises, but by-the-glass ordering is encouraged on the store's candle-lit wood-and-stone patio. Check the website for tastings and other oenological gatherings.

Bizet's Carmen isn't just known for its ferociously popular femme fatale but also for its transformation of opera comique into a contemporary dramatic art form. Prior to the tragic tale of a Sevillan seductress, European audiences enjoyed opera more as slapstick than gut-wrenching tear fest. LA Opera's production revisits Madrid's Teatro Real origination, with world-famous soprano Viktoria Vizin fanning her way through the iconic role. Directed by Javier Ulacia, Carmen tells the circa-1830 tale of a headstrong gypsy torn tragically between the love of two very different men: soldier Don Jose, and bullfighter Escamillo, the latter played by Raymond Aceto.
