Here's a snapshot of our favorite things to do in Los Angeles this week. |

Los Angeles
Jan 6-12, 2009

|
|
| |
For the first time in ages, this change of calendar seems palpably meaningful — more important than simply putting the debauchery of last week behind us and getting back to business; more than the usual half-hearted resolutions; and even more than the advent of the glitz and glam of the LA-centric art-fair and award-show season. Cautious optimism and perseverance are the order of the day as we trade in sequins for silk ties and resume our adult lives. And if you need more proof that hard work can overcome any obstacle, just ask apparent Minnesota Senator Al Franken! No one thought he could do it either, but it turns out that just like you and me, he's good enough, he's smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like him.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Interview: Perez Hilton
|
|
|
Like his beloved pop-culture icons, Perez Hilton is divisive. But unlike other celebrity-gossip bloggers, he has staying power. Flavorwire interviews the "queen of mean" (who's actually frighteningly nice) about his new book, Red Carpet Suicide, his plans for a new website, and the thrill of taking his first real vacation in years. Nicole Cohen engineers recombinant layers of still and video imagery, investigating the network of associations that interior spaces contain. Also, she has something of a chair fetish. Her current project, Please Be Seated, was commissioned by the Getty Center to be installed in its under-appreciated decorative-arts galleries. Depending on who you ask, the piece is either a high-concept, interactive experiment in identity-based era and experience conflation; a strategy to lure new audiences into the classical design galleries; or the fruits of her ongoing search for the sexiest chair in the world.

Recorded in a New Orleans kitchen, Swedish singer Theresa Andersson's latest album, Hummingbird, Go!, incorporates everything from the tapping of soda bottles to the rhythmic wonder of homemade water vases. Produced by Tobias Froberg and mixed by Linus Larsson (Peter, Bjorn and John), the collection marries Andersson's breathy vocals with organic acoustics (other background sounds include locusts buzzing in the artist's backyard). Fellow Swede Ane Brun and legendary New Orleans producer Allen Toussaint also appear. Paving the way for a sleeper hit, her everything-but-the-kitchen-sink video for "Na Na Na" has already garnered a million-plus views on YouTube. Catch her tonight, as she cooks up that nugget and many more.

The Egyptian Theatre's Focus on Female Directors series features eight shorts, including Green Porno, Isabella Rossellini's titillating probe into the sex lives of insects. Another eclectic and innovative highlight, Lana Kim and Andy Bruntel's C'mon Baby features stop-motion photography, while haunted Kirsten Dunst fable Welcome boasts an appearance by Winona Ryder. The program also includes documentaries, video art, and narratives, and concludes with a discussion with Amy Axelson and Kimberly M. Wetherell about their short Why We Wax. Words from Nicole Mitchell, whose Zoologic won her a 2008 Student Academy Award, round out the evening.

LA's monthly mixed-media Mardi Gras kicks off '09 with a series of girl-centered shows. Pharmaka's New Mythologies presents the works of six LA-based female artists, divulging universal themes of spirituality, science, and psychology. Phantom Galleries and THE Magazine explore themes of feminine power in What’s the Matter with Mommy, the Hang-Over, a multimedia celebration of alternative icons featuring 30+ artists. For its part, Phantom's huge adjacent space in the PE Lofts on Main & 6th hosts Lilli Muller's ambitious four-person curatorial project, Change is the Only Constant...part 2. The new feature ArtWalk Visa pushes things into the internet age, allowing web-enabled phone users to track their progress across the 20+ participating galleries in the neighborhood.

Gallery 1988 hits '09 running with the second installment of its Under the Influence series, this year paying homage to the Beastie Boys. One hundred artists — including Axis, Jason D'Aquino, Eric Tan, Jen Rarey, and Le Merde — reflect on all things Beastie. With works ranging from stained-glass portraits to re-imagined bandvertisements and graffitied vinyl, the exhibition reinterprets the many incarnations of the omnipresent hip-hop trio.

The Little Ones play the kind of pop music LA does best: no rock posturing or fake tales of hard knocks — just "California Dreamin'" for the new millennium. With hearty nods to '60s pop (think Beach Boys and the Zombies), the quintet's momentum has steadily grown since 2006's Sing Song EP. Last summer's full-length, Morning Tide, delivered another set of garrulous, clap-along pop tunes. The band hits the Natural History Museum's first First Friday of the year tonight alongside the folk-rockisms of Montreal-bred indie rockers Plants and Animals.

On the 62nd anniversary week of Elizabeth Short's unsolved murder, Esotouric rolls past the haunts of the so-called "Black Dahlia" to flesh out the details of her mysterious 1947 disappearance. The biographical bus ride kicks off at the opulent Biltmore Hotel, and makes its way past the former Crown Grill, where Short was last seen alive. Stops include a bygone bus terminal and the site where her body was discovered — bisected and drained of blood — at 39th and Norton. Focusing on Short's persona more than her death, the ride concludes with a novel and convincing hypothesis concerning the doomed dame's final days.

Note:
Esotouric also offers a season pass for $207, which includes four bus rides at a savings of $25.

When Jim Henson Company puppeteers first put on private workshops to develop their comedic skills, they had little idea the exercise would result in Henson Alternative. The naughty offspring of Sesame Street and The Muppet Show returns to the Avalon with a cast of pervy plushies, giving the classic improv setup a monstrous twist. The furry characters reveal the seamier sides of their puppeteers, which until recently have been kept under wraps by writers and child development pros. Now, their real voices are heard, and what they have to say is not for kids.

On the heels of '60s and '70s documentaries like Gimme Shelter and The Salesman, cinema verite filmmakers and fathers of the American documentary Albert and David Maysles ventured out to the eastern end of Long Island. There, the duo captured kooky New York blue bloods and society outsiders "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" at their dilapidated mansion house, Grey Gardens. Within those grey-shingled walls, the Maysles brothers chronicled the "amazing slow psychic train wreck" of mother and daughter Beale. This afternoon, Grey Gardens plays at LACMA. After the cult film's screening, stick around for a Q&A with the venerable Albert Maysles and his pal and fellow documentarian Liz Goldwyn.

John Tejada, LA's first name in minimal techno, trots out his beautifully rounded proto-melodies for a special edition of the Monday Social. Taking to the stage in anticipation of his latest release, fabric 44, Tejada hits with all the subtle color of the sublime Cleaning Sounds Is a Filthy Business and about ten times the bass. Expect recent interpretations of beats from long-time collaborator and fellow Palette Recordings artist Arian Leviste, plus cuts by the likes of Donnacha Costello and Orbital.

Bargain-hunting beauty queens and dollar store Don Juans convene as Bootleg Theatre pays homage to LA's kitschy holiday headquarters. The 99¢ Only Calendar Girl Competition gives contestants a penny-pinching challenge: dress yourself in 99¢-store ware with no accessory that exceeds a buck. The high-falutin' fashion brings out the finest in plastic flowers, assorted kitsch, and discontinued items — as well as R&B music by Ken Roht and John Ballinger and an appearance by costume designer extraordinaire Ann Closs-Farley. The show's nightly crowds determine which beauty queens move forward.
